7 mo yorkie bleeds to death A few months ago a young lady called me looking for a yorkie i sent her to a breeder that i have known for years that takes very good care of her dogs so she finds her little dream girl there and has her for a few months with no problem until she takes her in for spaying... the vet tells her that she bled to death while in surgery has anyone ever heard of this ? The breeder was very concerned but the vet assured her that it was not anything to do with her dogs, that it was something that just happened  |
You started another thread but it was blank! What a horrible story. That poor woman and that poor puppy. How very sad. I've never heard of this before but anything is certainly possible. Perhaps some blood disorder where the blood dosen't clot? Very, very sad. |

hard to prove. I don't think it's something he would admit too if it did happen. It's just so very sad, so young and now gone. |
Preanesthetic blood panels are elective and not mandatory. It does sound like a clotting disorder, and that is hereditary. That breeder should be made aware of that potential. I would've wanted an autopsy done by a secondary vet of a seperate practise on the dog to verify whether that vet did/did not knick an artery or some sort of other operator error. To lose dogs on the table in today's age is become less and less a concern. While some dogs will unfortunately hit their experation dates prematurely for unseeable circumstances, veterinary medicine has come a long way and is only becoming even more advanced, and when a fatal incidence does occur, it should be looked into, just like we would our two legged relatives. |
Wow! Sounds like the vet was not able to achieve homeostasis after nicking an artery possibly  That is just horrible but things to happen during surgery and there is always a risk of death even during simple procedures. How very sad :( |

How sad for your friend. In this article they do refer to females bleeding to death and on another couple of sites they say never do this procedure during heat for the same reason. Not all vets do the blood panel nor do all owners because it is an added expense as it is not required. Spaying Your Female Dog |

I know that some vets will not spay if your girl is in heat because there is a higher risk of bleeding. Maybe she was in heat. I am very sorry and please send my sympathy to the owner of this little girl, very heartbreaking. |
:( So sad. This is what I was told can happen if spayed during heat. My heart goes out to your friend for losing her Yorkie baby. |
It would be so heartbreaking to lose one this way.:( |
Yes it has been hard for the young lady that bought her because she had just lost her 10 yr old yorkie in dec and this little girl was very precious to her |
