Puppy coat
 

Hi there

We are the owners of a male and female yorkie. Both are registered with The Kennel Union of South Africa. She had 4 puppies and all 4 have white patches of hair on their chests and some have white toes. Can anybody please tell me why do they have these white patches if they are pedigree puppies.

Hi.. I read somewhere that puppies can be born this way but later on the white spots disappear... I think it is just a puppy thing.. they will fully change colouring anyway :)

It's totally normal - the white disappears as they grow :) my puppy had a white chest as a baby and by the time i picked her up she had no white on her. sometimes they have white on their paws or chest.

As those who have posted ahead of me, it's a common thing with puppies ... or at least, not UNcommon ... and is usually outgrown.

Something else is possible: they may be Parti carriers. They will still have papers - they're still full-bred Yorkies - just maybe they have the Parti gene. Personally, as I have no intention of ever showing, I'd LOVE to have a Parti - they're unique.

However, your pups will probably be the "normal" coloring.

BTW, Congrats on the litter. May they grow strong and healthy, give and receive much love!

Sounds to me like she's talking about only small bits of white which they outgrow. I was grateful for mine having a white paw underneath because i knew when i picked her up that it was the right puppy! lol! I was paranoid! all the others in the litter had been delivered to their new owners and i was convinced i would get the wrong puppy! my new puppy on his way also has a white/silver paw underneath :)

Tell me tho, what is the difference between a Parti Yorkie and a Biewer Yokrie? when i googled it once they looked very similar and in all honesty I have never come across a Biewer in real life. They are not very commom here in South Africa and the ones I found when looking for one carried a HUGE price tag that i could never in a million years afford! But in a thread the other day someone was VERY insistent that a Parti Yorkie and a Biewer Yorkie are NOT the same thing.

I will defer the answer to this to those that really know. As a "shot in the dark", the Biewers were developed by a Mr. Biewer in Germany. They breed true with white, black and tan colors. Their tails aren't docked (I think us North Americans are the only barbarians still left in the world :rolleyes:), and I believe they're a little larger (per standard) than a Yorkie. Also, because they're a "new" breed, the AKC does not yet accept them into shows, so they have to "do their own thing", if you know what I mean.

A Parti Yorkie, on the other hand, is a "sport". It's not common, although you can breed a Parti to a Parti (or Parti carrier) and get white, black and tan colors, too - just like the Biewers look. Mostly though, you won't get the uniform color distribution from a Parti Yorkie that you will get from a Biewer.

Now here's the kicker: a Parti Yorkie is still a Yorkie and can have AKC registry, but it can't be shown - it's not an "acceptable" color. However, they will generally cost more, even though they're out of "standard".

I put up a post about it - apparently the Biewers have very specific markings in certain areas. It's all very interesting.

Here in SA we aren't allowed to dock tails anymore either. I like my little girl with her curly tail! looks cute! It provides her with major entertainment because she chases it endlessly! lol! I wondered about showing...because their docked tails are part of the "breed standard" isn't it? I guess they have to change that now! I couldn't imagine her without a tail!

I don't think it's barbaric tho :) altho i read somewhere that one of the reasons that they changed the laws is because they learned that the tail is part of the dogs spine and by docking it some people feel it interfered with their natural balance or natural body design. I guess God made them with tails for a reason! and we as humans change that because we want them to look a certain way.

Some people still dock tails even though it is illegal :( my mom has 2 Jack Russells. the one has a curly tail and he is older. The other one has a docked tail and she was born after the law was passed. the breeder did it himself! EEK! Vets face a fine and/or their license revoked if caught docking tails so some breeders take it upon themselves to do it. I suppose that KUSA (Our breeders registry) doesn't see the puppies when they are registered.
