New to Yorkies Hi I'm new to having a Yorkie. Let me give you alittle background on how I got him, before I ask my questions. This little boy was given to me, by a lady that I met at my son's Dr's office. I was reading a puppy/kitten book mto my 5yr old son while we were in the waiting room. When he saw a pop picture he said that he missed Pouchie (our pom that died from a snake bite the week before), I was explaining to him that mommy had to find the perfect puppy for us, when this total stranger, asked if we would like a little yorkie, that she was thinking about giving hers away, and that it was full blooded . She gave me her number and said after I talked to my hubby to let her know if we wanted him. I talked to my husband and to our vet. Our vet said that as soon as we got him to bring him in so he could tell us what was wrong with him, because he didn't beleave that anybody would give a "full blood animal" away. My vet checked him, ran several tests, and did some x-rays. The only thing he found was a healing bite mark on his hip. Other than this he's perfectly healthy, he gets along with our cats, he's house broke, crate trained, and a very calm little dog. He is steel blue and a golden color, a real sweetie. Now I have three questions; 1. Is it normal for a yorkie to only eat out of your hand and not out of a bowl? 2. Is it normal for a yorkie to be calm and friendly to cats? The lady said that he had never been around cats. 3. What might be the reason that she gave him away to a perfect stranger? Don't get me wrong I'm glad she did but still it makes me wonder. |
Congrats! How old is the puppy? When I got Bella she would only eat out of my hand for the first month which was a pain (and time consuming) but eventually I put the bowl on my lap, then on the ground next to me sitting on the ground, then in the kitchen. It took awhile but it worked. If the puppy will only eat out of your hand though you should continue to do so because they can get very ill easily if they don't eat. I dont know why she was giving the puppy away maybe it was too much of a responsibility for her, and if its healthy than it couldn't be because it was going to be a financial burden. You could ask her to be honest and tell you why she wants to give away such a nice, well adapted little pup. Good luck! And congrats :) |

Many people rehome their pets, even yorkies. Sometimes it is the economy. Sometimes they find that they don't have the time that a small dog like a yorkie requires. Yorkies are very people-oriented, social dogs and like to be around people and other animals. There truly are many reasons. You stated your yorkie had a bite mark that was healing. Perhaps this woman had another dog that caused the bite? |
congrats! whatever the reason at least you got a wonderful furbaby out of it!! yaay! |

Welcome to YT! Congrats on your great gift. Enjoy!!! |
congrats on your baby! my dog would only eat out of my hand at first and to break her of it I did get a lil saucer she liked it so much better. Sometimes if they are around cats when they are young they will learn to get along. Daisy my jack-a-poo loves cats bc she grew up with them Enjoy your special gift there is NOTHING like a yorkie!! |

Hello and Welcome! Congratulations on your new pup. It is very rare for someone to give up a Yorkie, but maybe her lifestylke did not allow for that kind of commitment. She was very kind to give you such a precious gift. |
Hello and welcomt to YT! It is great to see you here. Congratulations on your new yorkie. It sounds like he will be a great addition to your family :) |
