Am I wrong? My Harley is 6 months old and walks very well on his leash. We had been walking regularly with a neighbor that has a yellow lab. In fact the lab helped Harley learn how to walk on leash. We were walking Sunday and one neighbor had let her 2 BIG dogs out of their fence. She assured us they were harmless. Long story short, one of her dogs jumped on the yellow lab. Thank God all our screaming and stomping startled them out of the fight. I had already picked up my baby and was walking off when the fight started. I would love to walk Harley, but I'm not going to risk his life just for exercise. We have encountered several dogs off leash in the past. They were harmless but it does make me nervous. Harley is very friendly and well socialized. He wants to greet all dogs and humans. But I am just too afraid. I want to just forget walks around the neighborhood. For his own safety I want to just walk him in my backyard. My nightmare almost happened Sunday. The only way I know I'm safe is in my own backyard. Am I being overprotective? Am I wrong? |

No you are NOT wrong! It is a shame that you cannot get out and enjoy walking in your neighborhood. I LOVE all dogs, BUT if it was ME... I would report each and ever instance of a dog off leash. Hitting them in the pocketbook is likely the only thing that will make some people take responsibility for thier pets. |
Is there animal control where you live? leash law? |
Thanks, Makes me feel better |
You aren't wrong at all!!! I have a similar problem in my neighborhood. One neighbor let's her chocolate lab run all over town, and he usually ends up in my yard. Another neighbor has three giant mastiffs and they are out in his yard all day, unsupervised. There have been a few times when i'm out in the yard with my dog and they come running over here. I know the dogs and they are very sweet, very large babies, but their paws are bigger than my whole dog and I'm terrified that they will stomp on him trying to play. The only solution i've found is to fence in my yard (which is a project i'm taking on this summer) and keeping my dog on a short leash so that I can grab him if there's an emergency. Good luck with your baby and the neighbors! |
It's too bad people are faced with these situations. You should be able to take your little one's for a walk without being molested by every mongrel running loose. I never used to see such a problem and I really believe the exploding pet population is the problem along with towns and cities that do not enforce their animal control laws as well as towns that do not even have animal control laws. However, if there are animal control laws in your town and you encounter these problems, but do not file complaints when problems are encountered then you cannot complain. File complaints, write letters, and those in small communities should attend the city commission meetings. |
I think owners need control of their pets. If that means a physical leash to keep the animal close to the owner, then that's what they need. Joey and Tank listen to my verbal commands, so I typically don't leash them when we go out to potty (we do use a leash for walks, though - and at petsmart and such). I've never had them run off when I told them not to - I am very lucky to have obedient babies! I really have no issue with bigger dogs off leash, as long as they are in control of themselves, and the owner has control of the dog if they happen to go nuts. I'm always at the ready to protect my boys, and they're never with bigger dogs without my husband or myself watching over them. |
Yes I agree/ I have no problem with large dogs if they are on leash. Responsible dog owners in my opinion should always leash their dogs when out on walks. This neighbor that I had trouble with Sunday usually has her dogs in the house or in the fence. She said the kids let the dogs out. But she was sitting on her porch watching them run around. To her credit she did get up and come out to the front yard to try to control that one mean one but by that time it was too late. The whole time she was telling us what babies her dogs were. I have since found out one dog is a rescue with serious issues. You just never know what can happen. Me and mine will stay in our own fenced in yard, and on leashs! |
Our animal control has 2 officers for a whole county. When you call all you ever get is a recording. I did complain to the police when we had an issue last year. Long story short our leash laws are a joke. I was complaining about strays at the time. The police informed me I'd have to find out who the dogs belonged to and file a formal complaint against the owner. THE DOGS WERE STRAYS!! THEY DIDN'T HAVE OWNERS!!!! But even if I had know an owner the first complaint is a warning. The second time a fine. The third time court, and hopefully a judge fines them. The police officer told my husband the best thing to do was just shoot them. Just make sure you don't shoot them in front of anyone. How's that for living in the 21st century. Feels more like the old west sometimes. Oh well, I'm staying in my backyard. Thanks everyone I don't feel guilty about it now. He gets exercise on our city streets fairly regularly. Thanks again |
It is too bad, but it seems like our babies are not safe anywhere. We are all they have to protect them. If some people think we are over protective, so be it. We need to do everything we have to do to keep our babies safe. |
We've got a similar problem in our neighborhood. MOST of the neighbors are great, but it only takes 1 or 2 bad apples to make walks miserable. We've got a demon dog on the next block who is on an electric fence in his front yard. NO ONE will walk past that house because the dog looks absolutely rabid! He goes nuts when someone walks by, the school bus drives by, etc... We are all afraid that one of these days the battery in his collar will go out and he will just go right through the line and hurt/kill some one. Animal control says until he actually does, they can't do anything. Ugh. |
I am scared to walk Callie around my block and in my neighborhood. There is a pitbull across the street and down two house from us and they tie him to a tree in there front yard and whenever he sees Callie or any dog he starts growling and snarling. We also have a some big dogs that run loose around here. We have a park less then 10 minutes from us that has a paved circle in the middle thats about a half a mile and I take Callie there when I want to walk and walk her. |
