Used to walk perfectly - now started pulling I have a 7 month old female Yorkie. I'm a at a bit of a loss as to why she started behaving strangely when walking. I started walking her when she was about 4 months old with a buddy belt and fixed length leash. She has been walking like an angel next to me all the time, not going ahead, and following nudges on the lead when I wanted her to change direction. Since a few days ago, she started pulling hard on the leash. When i nudge it, she is lying down and forcing with her paws in the opposite direction. As soon as I release the tension, she starts walking but she goes where she wants. I checked to see if maybe the buddy belt was too tight or uncomfortable but it seems fine. Could it just be a 'teenage' behavioral problem or is she getting close to her first heat and the hormones are changing her attitude? :aimeeyork |
Sounds like a little bit of both to me. |
Hi and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Hormones can definitely have that effect on them, and maybe she's testing you also. Maybe being a bit more firm with her in general would help: Alpha up a bit. But if it's all seasonal, you may just have to get through best as you can. When the mood passes, she should revert to her normal self. |

I always like to recommend the Premier Easy Walk harness or YT member chattiesmom Walk Nice harness. It has a d-ring on the front of the harness (as well as the back on chattiesmom - why I like hers!) and it simply re-directs them towards you to stop the pulling. Jackson will sometimes pull ahead more (he never pulls hard but if he hasn't been exercised all day, or is more energetic, he will go ahead of me more than I like) but the minute I clip the leash to the front of the harness, he walks right beside me. Other days, it doesn't matter where his leash is attached, he's an angel. So dogs just have their days I guess. |
