Another coat question Please forgive me... I am a new Yorkie owner. Chloe is now 6 months and for a while her coat was less than pretty. I was pretty sure she was going to have a cottony coat. Well, now her coat is getting more blue and is turning silky. The new growth that is pushing out the puppy coat has a beautiful, silky, metallic sheen to it. Is it possible for a puppy who was not so silky at 12 weeks to become a silky? Her hair could not be any more silky and beautiful. |
I would say yes. Riley's puppy coat SUCKED!! it was so stringy but it felt corse. and it was really dull looking. but now he is 3 yrs old and he has a BRAUTIFUL coat, that is still on the fine side, but it is so soft and silky and a pretty steal blue, and no longer that stringy crap, so I would say yes to your question, going on my experience with how much his coat changed when the puppy coat was gone, |
Thank you... I am so amazed over how much Chloe has changed over the past 3 months that she has been in our home! Quote:

Thanks =)... are puppy coats any indication of what the adult coat will be like, or is it more genetic... both her parents had thick silky coats... but since her puppy coat was black and not very metallic I assumed cotton. Now, as she is 6 months her hair is starting to grow out at the base and is a blue color and very silky. Her puppy coat has also become very lusterous. Again, thanks for all the info. Quote:

Usually at less than 4 or 5 months of age it is hard to tell for sure if it is cotton or silk in some cases. Some you would think will be cotton but htey aren't and the other way around. if you are seeing it breaking blue now it could be a little on the young side but may not be. Different lines do different things. Colour and type of the parents is not a for sure thing in the offspring. Time will tell what her coat will be like. As for colour, they can change up to three years of age. The darker it stays closer to a year of age, the more likely it won't go that light but yorkies are the hardest breed to breed true. That's why i and other show breeders often end up with one for sale to a pet home at close to a year or even older. Something changed that in my eye, it is not what I want for the show rings, so it is spayed/neutered and available to a good pet home. |
This link explains alot about coats, age, texture and what to expect. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...rt-thread.html |
