Plastic feeding dishes Just wondering about if it's true that you shouldn't feed your dogs out of plastic feeding bowls? I thought that I had saw this somewhere but don't remember where. I guess maybe it might be time to buy new bowls then. |

and they can chew up the plastic ones:eek: |
I use ceramic bowls because I've heard that plastic can get scratches and bacteria can harbor in the scratches, and aluminum bowls, can eventually leach out nickel, which can cause a high allergic reaction. I think you are fairly safe if you replace bowls when they are starting to show signs of wear. Even with ceramic bowls, you have to be careful, some are made with lead, which can leach our if they haven't been properly made, so look for only those which say safe to use for food, but don't overlook cat food bowls, and bowls that have been made for human use. Yorkies don't need big bowls. |

There was an article I read in the not too distant past. A yorkie was experiencing siezures...Every test imaginable had been run, with nothing revealing the source/cause of siezures. The owner began a process of elimination, with the final change, after reading an article on plastic, she changed to stainless steel bowls. The siezures stopped. Evidently the plastic was emmiting a toxin to the dog and causing the siezures. |
Somewhere while researching Liver Shunt, a few articles stated that chemicals can leach out of the plastic into the food and water, and while most dogs aren't bothered by it, if you have an LS dog it would be best to use SS or ceramic. I also bought Pyrex glass bowls to store leftover food in (only for the LS doggie). Can also happen with water bottled for human consumption. The news stated a few months back about the dangers of reusing the plastic bottles, chemicals leaching into the water as the bottle ages. Just thought of this... I know the plastic bowls are very pretty and/or cute... maybe use a SS bowl inside the plastic ones, that way they still look pretty? |
