Hello, I hope someone can help me on this. Is $600 a reasonable price for a yorkie pup that has a hernia. Is a hernia something serious and shouldn't even be considered when buying a pup? Please help!!! :confused:

Here's some information about hernias in dogs. Do you know what kind of hernia it is? Looks like it would need surgery to be corrected, but I am by no means an expert. Maybe call a vet and ask about it?

Surgical correction via suturing the hernial opening is the most common method of correcting a hernia in animals. Sometimes, artificial material is sutured into the area to assist in forming a barrier to tissues that shouldn't be present.

Price can vary so much from place to place. My Yorkie boy was $500 with full AKC registration. But $600 is not a bad price to pay for a Yorkie, but for that that price, the breeder should have the hernia fixed for you. I am not an expert on hernias but here is my take on the subject - A hernia is a tear in the muscle wall of the abdomen and can sometimes be serious. If the tear is large enough, the intestines can protrude through and there is the possibility of a blockage, I think. A friend of mine raises Chihuahua's and when she has one like this, she fixes the hernia and sells as pet quality only. The hernia, if not too serious can be fixed at the time of spay/neuter while the pup is asleep. Best of luck with your choice on either this Yorkie or waiting for another in better health...either way, you will love it for sure.

I really don't know what type it is, its near his bottom area though. I have fell in love with this puppy but don't want to get overwhelmed with alot of financial obligations. The breeder stated that is why he is selling the pup for such a low amount.

I talked to a vet and she told me that I could get the hernia fixed at the time of neutering. But I'm really surprised that you paid that amt for an AKC registered pup, this breeder gave me info for CKC only. I have been shopping around and to be honest with you this is the best price I've seen yet but I'm really apprehensive about this and may just let him pass :( and keep looking. I'm in VA wish I was in your area though :D

I guess it depends on where you are located and who are you getting it from. Three years ago I was offered a male yorkie with a hernia. The breeder only wanted $250 for him(Which is pretty much what she put into the puppy.).The hernia was a very small one and could be fix easily with surgery. But I wasn't looking for a yorkie then so I decline her offer. But then I knew the breeder. I've gotten a puppy from her a year before.

i got a completely healthy baby boy for $500..... not papered though, just "pet"

That seems high to me. I would check with a vet to find out how much they will charge for the surgury. Plus I would want a very good health guarantee. Anathesia is tough for small yorkies.

Thanks so much for the input, I hadn't even thought about the side effects of the surgery. Everyone has been such a big help!! I'm gonna think on this, Ive contacted a vet and once I talk to her I'll make my decision, but at least I have some good questions/issues to ask her.

I paid $500 for my sick yorkie. We took him to the vet on day three and paid for medicines. I would definitely speak with your vet of choice before getting the little pup. If the side effects of surgery are low, I would probably go for it. Many vets won't even give toy dogs anesthesia from what I understand.
