DJ's Ears are standing!!
 
DJ's ears of oficially standing for the first time fully. I took a pic of him this morning because I know some of your asked for me to post a picture of his ears standing so here it is...

DJ is a little doll, that's for sure. Cartilage holds the ears up, and sometimes during teething calcium is pulled from the cartilage to help create new teeth, at these times ears might droop again. A tip to help the ears stand is to trim excess hair off of puppy's ears. Most breeders recommend that the top third of the ear be shaved. I found it very hard to cut the ear outline with a scissors, and if you make a mistake, ears bleed readily, so in between trips to the groomer I use this little clipper on his ears. http://media.cymaxstores.com/Images/1366/167837-SM2.jpg. You can find it at Target for less than $10.00, and you never have to worry about cutting them. They trim the tips perfectly!

thanks what dept do you get that at as i like that better than the one i have that is great -- the breeder kept getting on me when dd ears flopped to tape them up :( so we did so i just learned alot thanks as never knew about the calcium aspect - My poor dd looked like an alien yorkie lolllll and dex was not impressed - here are before and after shots loll

Lol, those pictures are adorable, I probably shouldn't say this because I'm always yapping about breeding to standard, but I think drooping ears are adorable! While I would never recommend a breeder breeding for them, I think they look so sweet. I do love perky ears too though! He does look so funny with his ears taped, did they ever to stand on their own? Lol, now the ones in the avatar are huge! This is a great picture, and her ears are well within standard. I swear it looks like you can see a couple of front teeth in that picture, it looks like she has bunny teeth too! :D That's adorable!

hahaha - LOVE THE PICTURES - my husband taped Chanels - it lasted one day and I took it off. I swear she was picking up satellite stations :D....

I thought it was cute that he researched it and tried....(lousy job but he did try lol) She was NOT impressed either

her ears stood on their own as did Cheri's but I know some puppies need help if one wants standing ears and they aren't co-operating. Me - I just let them do what they wanted to do and kept the hair shaved down....

lol yeah the tv was working real well when she had the tape on there lol the funny thing is i took her to the vet for him to tape them lollll i was such a new dog mom i tell ya but the breeder i would send her pics and she would email me GET SOME TAPE ON HER EARS lollll

Gigi's ears went up a few days after I got her and it scared me when I went in to get her out of her pen that morning! I wasn't expecting them to go up so fast!

I didnt do anything to get his ears standing. He has never been trimmed yet at all and then one day they decided to just stand. I know some people feel differently about this but I think its horrible to put tape on a poor puppy ears. It would hurt to take off and I feel nature should take it course itself...you should never force something on something so small to happen. I know some of you will disagree but its how I feel about the entire "taping of the ears situation"

I was just saying that they might droop again when he starts teething around 6 months or so. If done property, taping shouldn't hurt, you shave the ear first, so that there is no hair to pull, and you use special tape, but you are right, it could hurt, if not done carefully.

As Nancy stated, some puppies, especially boys and those that are a bit larger...not so much with the small ones. As they teeth and as their little testicles drop they may go down. Just make sure you keep the weight off them. Keep them trimmed, weekly....before his bath. If the stay down for more than a few days, they may need to be tapped just to help themn stay up. There's different methods of doing it....some with surgical, breathable guaze tape, it does not hurt to take it off. Believe me I've had to assist a few pups ears to stand and the methods I use to remove the tape, they don't even know it.

DJ looks adorable. And i do agree with you about not taping the ears. If the ears are up or down well thats the dog and they shouldn't be made to have their ears standing up if it isn't natural for them. Alfie is 7 months tomorrow and his ears were floppy until this weekend when one popped up, the other is still floppy though lol. I do love the floopy ear look as it makes them still look like puppies but if he's going to have one up and one down, well then, so be it.

Yeah...DJ is prefectly fine and doing well. He is always playing running around like a mad man and eatting alot. He follows me around the house from room to room. Hes doing well! :)
