Cold and Yorkies New yorkie owner needs assist So as I continue to learn...It has been chilly here with a good breeze...50s or so. When I take little Fizz out he stands and shivers...Is that chilly for them? Also because I don't know what he came from as far as living conditions...I don't know how to judge the shiver. |
I think it just depends on the dog. How small is he? Jackson is almost 16lbs and the cold never seems to bother him. He runs thru snow, blizzards, whatever, he loves it. The only time he started shivering was in the last blizzard we had and the snow was blowing all around, it was probably around 15 degrees, and after about 10 minutes of running around... he was just standing there shivering, LOL. Poor thing. I have a few hoodies and a winter coat for him that seem to keep him warm under there! But Yorkies don't have an undercoat like most dogs, so they are going to get cold easier. They have human-like hair so there's not much to keep them warm. |

That is one of the harder things. For the most part he is not shy any more. I know he is eating okay as I have to stand in the kitchen while he eats...or my other dog (the vaccuum) will eat his food. I have a doggie T-shirt so I will put it on him more often when it is chilly. But right now he is sleeping next to me and shivers every once in a while in his sleep too. I just love this little guy so want to understand the small breed. He was a stray...so this is a new adventure. |

So they won't over heat inside with a T-shirt on? I guess I can keep that on him. I was looking at winter coats for next year and the doggie fleece with the velcro on the back looked pretty good. I am grateful for all the assistance I have recieved. It is interesting to have a prue breed dog...My mutts have always been pretty hardy. Little Fizz will be a new kind of dog adventure...But still in my rescue mode type of personality. Don't know that I would ever get a puppy, but would definatly give a home to a dog in need. My hubby is a dog person too and he is good with them...so he is learning too. |
Sweater I live in North Texas and the winters here are usually mild, but this past winter it actually got pretty cold along with some decent snow. Our dogs are small (5.5 lbs & 6 lbs) and before they went outside, I made sure they had their sweaters on. If it was really cold, I put their little jackets on over their sweaters. Plus, I only let them outside for about 10 minutes maximum at a time. I think it depends on your dog, too. Our little Coco loved the snow and jumped around in it like a little rabbit, but Gracie didn't want anything to do with it. To me, it's very important to keep them warm because of their size (small animals lose body heat more quickly than large animals). If I'm in doubt about it being too cold or not, I err on the side of caution and just keep them inside and they can take care of dirty business on their pee pads. If it's cool out, I would definitely recommend a little sweater, limit time outside, and maybe even leave the sweater on for a little while after he comes in until he can get re-acclimated. I don't think he'll overheat !!! :D Good luck !! |
I figure if I'm cold, then Bailey is cold. If I need a sweater, then Bailey gets a sweater. :) |
Yep. I also put a sweater on Abby when I take her out when it's cool enough and a coat over the sweater in the winter. If she gets cold in the house, I either put her snuggie on her(which she loves) or I cover her up with one of her blankets.:) |
Thnaks all for the suggestions. I am a chilly person by nature so will use my temp as a gauge too. Need to find a couple of sweaters I guess. Never had to worry about Marivin...Part of his Mutt is the sheppherd coat. He is always warm...Hope he does not laugh at fizz's couture;) |
Feel the skin on the inside of his ear...if it's more that cool...he's cold. |
Our Toto is a cold natured little girl ... wears a little T-shirt inside every day, sweaters & coats outside and has to have a blankie when she is napping. She probably has as many clothes as I and even more laundry! ;) |
