Any recommendation? Hello everyone! Last month, I started my 5 month puppy with heartworm medication (Heartguard). It was a sample given to me by her vet and at the time I did not think much about it. However, she is due for the second round of heartworm meds in a few days and I am starting to look for safe and effective heartworm meds in the market. Can anybody give me any recommendations on heartworm medications that are safe for smaller breeds. I feel a little uncomfortable about Heartguard and their 25lbs for smaller breed dosage. My puppy is only 5 pounds. I feel like I am over-medicating her!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!! :) |
I use and like Intercepter they break it down a little better by weight the small one is from 2-10 pounds instead of going to 25 pounds. Although Callie takes the 11-25 pound one because shes 15/16 pounds. |
You could try Revolution, as it takes care of heartworms as well as fleas, ticks, etc. I know they offer an under 10lb for puppies and kittens formula. |
I've used Sentinel on 4 dogs year-round with no adverse side affects. The have a 2-10 lb dosage, and it takes care of heartworm, fleas, roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm. It is a very tiny pill, I just stick it in a small amount of peanut butter and they lick it off a spoon, so it is very easy to give. |
I prefer Interceptor over Heartguard as studies have shown Ivermectin (Heartguard) can lower the seizure threshold in some dogs. |
We use interceptor. It's for dogs 2-11 pounds...now if only we could find a flea and tick medicine that had such a narrow weight range. |

Thank you all for the prompt responses... I will research a little bit on Interceptor and Revolution to see what is it that I'm going to do. Just a few more questions: Where do I buy them? Do I need a prescription from the Vet? Thanks in advance, Thania |
Wait.. should ALL yorkies be on heartworm medication? |

Jackson gets Iverhart Plus and I think it's basically the same to Heartguard Plus. But I'm pretty certain the dosage is smaller. |

I started my 4 lber on Iverhart and she threw it up the first two months. I then went to a heartguard tab, but had to force it down her. I just gave her a heart guard chewable and that went very well. |
