Hi - New Here Hi all, I'm new here and trying to figure this site out, so bear with me. I have a half Yorkie, half Pomeranian female whom we adore. Want to breed just to have a pet from her because she is so adorable. I have a friend who has a registered male Yorkie who wants to breed with her just for a pet puppy. My dog has a very silky coat, while the male has a coarse coat. We're not in, nor are we going into the breeding business, but love our pets and want one of their puppies. I'm not crazy about having a puppy with this type of coat and wonder about the odds. And what does a coarse coat "really mean"? She mentioned getting him from a pet store and I was concerned that most likely he came from a puppy mill. Our Gracie looks like a Yorkie rather than a pom and that's why we just wanted to breed her with a Yorkie, and they are such sweet pets. Thanks for any help or advice. |
Welcome to YT! All I can say is you have a 50-50 chance on the coats when you breed two different breeds. Sorry, I bet that didn't help. But I did want to welcome you. :) |
Thank you for Warm Welcome I appreciate your response and I guess i realized that the odds were 50/50, but can you tell me what it really means when they have a coarse coat? |
Hi Sherry! Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I'm in no way an expert in coats, I have 2 silky coated Yorkies. What I do know about the coarse (Or cottony) coat is that the fur is thicker and mats easier than a silky, but if you keep them in a little shorter cut, it's not too bad. I agree with mustangbee-you probably have 50/50 chance. |
coat When they have a coarse coat it means they do not have a desired coat according to the standard, it is improper..breaks off and never grows long. You can get pups with three types fo coat, silk, soft (Pom) and coarse like the sire. ..or you can get a mixture of coat on the same puppy. Some could have a coarse head and legs, but Pom type body hair..and so on. |
Hello and welcome to Yorkie Talk. Glad you found us all here. Your Yorkie sounds really sweet, what is her name? Feel free to share pictures if you'd like. |
Hi and welcome to YT. Im Debbie Mickey and Minnies Mommy. I agree theres a 50/50 chance it could go either way. I know this is not true advise but just what has always happened to us. The first litter of pups from every female we have ever had turned out to look more like the Dad. Now this is a chance thing I know, and I wouldent swear it lol. but it has always been that way for us. I dont know why. |

Welcome. I have a yorkie with a silky coat and one that is cottony and a little silky mixed. Like Pat said, part of her went cottony and toward her rear end she is silky. I just keep her a little shorter than the other and use conditioner. |
Warm Welcomes Thanks to you all for the responses to my earlier post. I really appreciate them and the information. Our baby's name is Gracie and she is just too sweet. My experience with these dogs so far has been amazing and everyone I know who has them, just adores them. Like I said, Gracie is half pom (registered red) and her mom is registered Yorkie. However, she looks just like her mom. So, we were kind of hoping for the same results if we try to breed her. I so enjoy all the pics of your babies and am truly glad I found this site. I can't stay away now. Thanks again. |
Everyone had answer the coat question so I wanted to Welcome you to YT. Cant wait to see pics of Gracie. |
