I heard the same thing from our builder. A friend of mine has Pergo (faux wood) and uses a steam cleaner and is happy with it, but with real wood, it's too expensive to take the chance.

we have laminate (fake wood) and bought a shark steamer, I noticed that it dulls the finish... I have been trying to find something that doesnt do this for my laminate floor and so far The Pledge for hard wood floors does a good job w/ a microfiber cloth sweeper (wet of course)... then for the spots I found Simple Soultion for Hard floors, seems to be working he isnt repeating going in the same spots... I just want to know what else I can use w/ the shark steamer so that my floors are shiny and not dull...

While on the hardwood floor topic. I have laminate down because the salesman told me that the dogs would ruin the hardwoods. We had always hard carpeting prior and due to the pee pee issues, we decided to pull it all out and put down wood. Since the salesman reccomended against the wood, we went with his reccomendation of laminate. It was a BIG MISTAKE. I've had them down just about two years and they are already ruined. Bubbling in areas. Now, I wipe up the pee pretty much right away, unless of course we are out. Still over time it bubbles. My question to you guys is how are the hardwoods? Any staining or problems with pee or poop on them? How often do you need to have them redone? I went for $6,000 and for $500 more could have went with real wood which I would have prefered and now two years later I have to have them replaced. Also, any downsides to the hardwood. Thanks. I have the laminate to and mine is doing the same thing I really don't like it
but it is better with the dogs.
At my other house i had hardwood and it got black spots where they p'd

Next time i might go large tile with skinny grout but the prob with the grout and pee getting in it is a prob too :( especially with colored grout which we have as you cannot use vinegar on it as it discolors it and breaks it down as vinegar is acidic.

we had replaced brand new carpet we put in when moving in as i had no dogs and even went through house before buying with a pee light lolllllllll to make sure no issues and replaced all carpet and then low and behold i get not one but THREE DOGS - yes the lady with the black light got THREE DOGS lolll how funny is that now i had to rip out the family room and replace carpet due to pee stains and allergies of dee dee lol

My wife uses a damp mop with a bit of vinegar. Fortunately both dogs will not go on the Hardwood floors, but the yorkie will find a nice wool rug to sometimes go on....13 and still not 100% housebroken. Someday all the wood will have to be redone as the big dog has gouged and scratched them as his paws are as big as my fist. Both stories of the house are all wood.

For carpet, I have used Spotshot and damp paper towels.
