Louis won the award at the vet today....... Not an award that I am proud of though. He went in to have his toenails clipped and it took the vet tech and the vet to hold him down to cut his nails. It sounded like he was being tortured. Poor guy.:( They said he was one of the toughest dogs to have his nails clipped they have seen in a long time. The vet tech said he definitely "won the award for it". Do any of your dogs act this way when they are getting their toenails clipped? This is the first time I have had the vet do it. I usually do it myself, but it takes so long because I am scared I am going to hurt him. I will defiantly be having the vet do it from now on. |
I clip Twinkies nails in between her grooming appointments. She isn't thrilled with it, but I try to stay as calm as possible, so she stays calm. I can say she is getting much better, especially when she knows a treat will follow!;) |
I dread taking Buddy next month for his yearly. I have to muzzle him to be sure no one get's hurt:( He's so terrified of being there I don't even ask to have his nails clipped. I'm afraid he'll go into cardiac arrest. I can't wait to spend the $400.00 and get out of the office as fast as I can. My other dog's never reacted the way he does and he's the smallest. Thank heavens he's healthy and we only go once a year. Glad it's over with for your baby. I understand how he feels. |

I am yet to go through the same thing.. never clipped Samy's nails and will definitely have the vet do it as I do not have the clippers or the courage to do it myself... at least not yet... I bet Samy will be the same as Louis. |

Bathtime is hard enough for me! She freaks out when she gets wet! There's no way I could cut her nails on my own. I let the groomer do it :/ |
My grandson's Westie screams like you're doing open-heart surgery on him without anesthetic. It's *pathetic*. When he's asleep, or even just sitting by our sides, we rub his feet, spread his pads and toes, rub them individually ... no problem. Break out the clippers or the dremel and - if you can catch him! - he screams bloody murder. It's a wonder the neighbors haven't called the cops on us because he sounds like a baby. Also, for 14 lbs., he's a STRONG li'l sucker! It's hard to even hold him in a blanket. Needless to say, his nails don't get clipped nearly as often as they should ... |

Awww it's awful that they are so scared. TO be honest, I can't clip Buddy's either, that's why, at times, I allow him to want to go after a big dog when were walking because we're on blacktop and he digs to hard into the street he gives himself a manicure. I know that's bad but heck, it does the job.:p |

I guess Thor is an angel, relatively speaking! He doesn't like it, but he holds still. I'm a big believer in desensitization. Take a month to get him used to it. Just show him the clippers and give him a treat the first day. Then rub the clippers on his body and give him a treat. Then put the clippers near his feet, treat. Then put the clippers on the nail, but don't cut, and treat. Cut one nail (make sure those clippers are nice and sharp), praise them to the heavens, give them great treats. Clip one nail a day for a week. Then try clipping a few, etc. If at any point he panics, back up a half a step, and just stay there, giving him treats until he calms down. Go as slow as he needs. It sounds monotonous, but take just a few minutes a day for 30 days, and you'll save your pup distress during this needed activity for the rest of his life. |
Jackson is TERRIBLE at getting his nails done. Just horrible. I bought a clipper and tried to do 'em myself and he lets me without putting up a big stink... but it's a long process because he moves his paws all the time. I let the groomer do it and she says he's pretty hard but she just goes slow and takes her time. I brought him to Petsmart once and he FLIPPED... I won't bring him back there again just because it was so stressful on him. 3 people had him holding him down, and because he was spazzing out so much, they put a muzzle on him just to be safe (he's never bit anybody but just to be safe!) and he expressed his anal glands he was so scared. So from now on it's me or my groomer doing them! |
