Horrible Scare-Cover the Backyard?
 
Yesterday evening, about dusk, I had my two pups outside, along w/a boarder, a chihuahua, named Lexi...Thinking the hawks were probably bedded down, I felt, relatively, safe...I just happened to look up, and a hawk, that looked as big as a small plane, was diving down towards the backyard...I went insane, screaming, running around, and waving my arms, and it did fly off to the west...Then I was screaming for all the dogs to come in, and, thank goodness, they did...I'm sure they heard the panic in my voice...I just can't let them out there, unleased, anymore, and wondered if anyone has any ideas about how to cover some of the backyard? I have a pretty big yard, so netting really wouldn't work...I'm just wrecked, because they love to go out there and really dig in and run...Because I don't have carpet, they can't really do that in the house...Hopefully, someone has some answers...

I don't have any suggestions for covering the yard, but OMG what a scary thing to happen. It is so stressful that you can't even let your babies go out in a fenced yard off leash, but the birds of prey are such a real threat. I hear and see them all the time at my house. I am glad you saw it in time and got all the furbutts to safety.

Just a question...do they have the flashing light things on their collars? My sister uses one of those on her yorkie and it works really well. They are specifically made to deter hawks and animals who may think they are rodents on the ground. We can get them from our designer doggie boutique in town! So sorry this happened to you! This past weekend I went to visit our local bird sanctuary and the nature center to gather some wildlife information. As for protecting our little furbutts from the hawks they suggested setting up bright colored windsock's and using lighted flashing collars (also suggested by maryeverette:)). Mesh netting that is used in orchards to protect the fruit on fruit trees, however, the hawks could get caught in it and become injured if not done strategically:(.

I wonder how many windsocks's you would have to have to be effective? I have quite a big back yard, but would put a gazillion out there to protect my kidz...How and why does that deter the hawks? I'm going to check into those lighted flashing collars, although, in the evening, I could leash them, and take them out...It's just in the daytime they, desparately, want to run around in the back yard...

I'm waiting to get one of the seed flyers in the mail again. In this flyer there was this netting that goes over trees to keep the birds from eating the fruit. I'm wondering if something like this would be helpful, they are really big. I'm wanting something for the play area I have for my dogs.

This is probably the biggest fear of everyone here! :eek:

I remember someone posting in the past about sparklie vests that their pups wore when in the yard to deter the hawks. I think they had someone on YT make them special order but I am not sure who. Seems to be along the same idea as the blinking lights on the collars.

On a lighter side~I have a visual of your yard:

Fifty or so wind sockets very few feet blowing in the wind around the perimeter yard. Yorkies running and jumping about sparkling like Liberace. Colored lights hanging from the trees. All covered is a GIANT net! But the safest yorkies in the entire state of TEXAS :p

Another thing one of the guys on here suggested in the past was gazing balls. They reflect the hawks and the hawks see that.

How about a dummy of an even bigger bird of prey? I know those things work on some birds, especially if you move them around regularly so they don't suss it's a dummy.
