Help! New Confused Yorkie mom!!!
 

Hello everyone!
I would like some suggestions. I am a new mom of an 11 week old female Yorkie puppy. She is scratching and I don't know what to do for her because she's so small. She weighs 1lb and 3ozs. What do I do for her itching? Please help!!

Hi and welcome!! What food are you feeding her because it may very well be food allergies? Have you ever given her a bath? If we know the answers to these questions, YT members will be able to give you the best advice.

What is making her scratch. Have you checked for fleas or spots of any kind on the skin? When did the scratching start? Was she scratching at the breeders? Did you give her any new food or is she eating the exact same thing? Have you given her any snacks and if so what.
Is she scratching in one area only or all over? When was her last vaccine?

In addition to the above questions... is she on flea medications or has she been checked for fleas?

Did the itching just start, or has she been itching since you got her?

I'm no expert and don't want to repeat others but this is what comes to mind

Fleas - it can be really hard to actually see them - but with summer coming - this could easily be the problem

Bathing - you MUST rinse really well or the residue from shampoos and conditioners will cause itching

The KIND of shampoo you may be using - oatmeal is a good remedy for itchy dogs - but again - RINSE them very well

Allergies - that can be hard to detect but there's lots of info here about them.....if you do searches you may find out how to determine if she has them

Changes in her food - some food will cause changes in the coat / skin which in turn will cause itching

Mites - hopefully this is NOT the problem - they suck and are hard to treat and there's different kinds - a vet can probably help you there if you feel you can't get a grasp on why this is happening

Coat changes - sometimes the adult coat coming in will cause them to itch (I've heard that - don't know if it's true or not)

Air conditioning / heat - changes in the home can cause them to scratch -

bugs - maybe not fleas but the air is full of bugs - mosquitos come to mind...

all of this is a pain in the butt and can cause a dog to be miserable but if you rule out what it isn't and she's still scratching - then you may need to see a vet

Hot Rod came to us really itchy too. Long story short, one vet thought it was ringworm, got 2nd opinion and new vet and tried medicated shampoo and medicated conditioner and everything calmed down. His hears used to flake in big chunks! We have also found out that he is allergic to chicken. There could be lots of factors as to why your baby is itching. You've got a lot of good suggestions already. Best of luck to you. Just try to do one thing at a time so you can isolate the trouble.

My baby girl is also allergic to chicken. she gets flaming red around her mouth and nose when she eats it.
We have switched to Primal raw lamb and things have settled down. She doesnt get any grains...at all!
I give her coconut oil which also has really helped her coat and skin. Gook luck!
I know it can be so miserable. mine scratched all the hair off her ears then ended up getting a secondary skin infection. its been a long battle but dont give up!!:D

An 11 week old puppy is too young for food allergies. Their bodies need constant exposure over time to build up the antibodies that trigger the allergic reaction.

Have you taken her to the vet? If she came to you scratching it could be fleas, mites, etc.
