Insite on small and standard size I have read some threads about people with back problems needing smaller yorkies.2 and 3 lbs ones .I just want to share my story ,I have back problems .I was in a accident when i was young and left with a bad back .I had back surgery in 2007 to repair herniated disc L5-S1,i have degenerative disc disease ,and 3 other bulging disc .I am going to have surgery again due to another herniated disc that happen JAN- of this year ..I kinda just wanted to give you a ideal of my back..Did'nt meen to go on and on .Here is what i have decideed as far as small and standard size yorkies .i have one of each .one is 2lbs and one is 6lbs .I have only had the one that is 2lbs for 2wks.he is 6mts old .OK here it goes, i have had more back pain in the last 2 wks than before. my 2lb one can't do anything without my help ,if i want in in my lap i have to bend down and get him if he wants petting i have to bend down to pet him ,if i want to put his leash on ,again i got to bend down .if he wants on the bed or the couch i got to pick him up when we go in the car i got to pick him up and put him in .I love him to death and would'nt take nothing for him but he is so demanding ,NOW my 6lb baby can do all the above by him self ,well he can't put his leash on, but he will jump up in my lap for me to the only thing that is easy with the 2lb is carrying him but thats not all day .To make a long story short ,THE SMALL ONE IS HARDER ON MY BACK. LOL..THANKS FOR LETTING ME SHARE MY STORY . |
Sorry you're having so many problems, but nice to hear your story. Many people justify the "need" for a smaller dog because they have bad backs. I've wondered about that for the very reasons you've listed. Mignon is still very young and man surprise you yet, adding a few more pounds before he reaches full adulthood. My two put on a few pounds more even after 14 months, just "filling out" their adult frames. Do yourself a favor and get pet stairs: they learn rapidly and it can be a godsend for those who can't bend over. If you've read this forum for very long, there are always pros and cons for every single thing you ask. In the end, you have to make the choice that best fits YOUR needs. Give the pups a skritch, and stay healthy. |

I also have back problems and I find the pet stairs a god send. We decided to take the stairs away from the couch and propped two pillows at one end, like a little ramp. Twinkie flys up the pillows and onto the couch all day long. I guess being creative with these little ones are a plus. ;) |

I have a small one that's 2.6 lbs, but who does not require any of my help. My bed is about 2ft tall and this girl can jump all the way up there. She climbs on my sofas, chairs and even my back. I do get scared she might break or tear something but so far no emergency bills, hopefully she will soon learn to use nothing but the steps. My girl does have long legs for her tiny body which helps her tremendously. I think any size is a beautiful size.:) |
he might get less helpless as he gets older. I have a 2 3/4 pound girl that I cannot stop from jumping on the furniture or our laps and I have 3 males 3 different sizes and none of them will jump. So size really doesn't seem to matter. the steps might help him to gain confidence. |
My 2 1/2 lb Chihuahua takes a lot more work and bending than my 4 and 6 lb dogs so I can attest to what you are saying. They are cute and easy to hold but they have to get there some way. I do have stairs and she uses them to a point but there are many times she just insists that we do the work for her. There is no way she can get on our bed even with steps. Another thing is that she so easily gets knocked off chair arms and such. No matter how careful you are even 10 lb dogs are tiny but a tiny under 4 lbs can be a pain. She can also squeeze through the tiniest space. I have to watch her every move. The one thing that people always love about her is the fact that she is so tiny. She is by far NOT the best quality dog I have. They only care that she is so tiny which makes me sad because they don't care about anything else. |
I completely agree!! i am sitting in a hospital bed as i type recovering from back surgery. i have a 4 pound dog a 6 pound dog and a 12 pound dog the smaller they get the more they need me to bend down and help i do have pet steps and a few ramps and they are a god send. You should get some they will help. i have heard people say they have to have smaller dogs because they cant carry the extra weight around and it dose confuse me but they way i figure it they are gonna find a excuse to get the size they want so its no use arguing about it |
Very interesting perspective on the problem, thank you for posting, it gives others something to think about. |
