Whats up with this dry coat?? My 6 month old pup has such a dry strange coat. I used to work at a grooming salon so I have seen all sorts of yorkie coats but I have never seen one like the one Shea has. It is super dry, does not lay down, and is not growing. Matter of fact, you can pick her up and when you put her down, her hair is sticking out and up! So weird. Does anyone else have a yorkie with this type of coat? Any recommendations? Her skin is a little dry as well. |

I don't know but Tobie's coat is like that and it drives me crazy. He's 15 months old and his coat (except for the color) is pretty much the same as when he was a puppy. I use Pet Silk shampoo on him which makes his coat much softer for a couple of days but that's it. |
try Coconut oil on it. It helps alot and its safe & healthy for them to eat! My friend mixes a bit of it into her dogs food and it has smoothed out the coat and she doesnt scratch anymore. She also rinses her dog with a little bit of apple cider vinegar after every bath... |
sometimes Chloe's coat is like that too.. but sometimes its shiny n soft n silky... idk i guess she's having a bad hair day lolz i put a lil bit of curel lotion on my hands and then i rub my hand all over her... helps on her lil bad hair days lolz |
No, I dont think its just puppy coat...I wish! Her black has grown out and the silver that has replaced it feels exactly the same:p yucky! Krystee, tobie looks like he has a nice shiny coat compared to Shea. lol. I have to get a picture of her up here. And everyone always thinks she is wet because her tips are frosted black lol |
by the way...does anyone know how to get her picture to pop up next to my name? I made an album but dont know how to get a profile pic! |

Yorkies have a much diffferent coat than most other dogs and you have to be very careful what you shampoo it with. There are some products some use on here for their yorkies, you could try. Yorkies do not have the undercoat, so they need a different type of shampoos and nothing too harsh - get rid of the flea types of shampoos, if you are using them. When I first got into yorkies many moons ago and took my pet to the groomers - her coat was so harsh and dry form what they were using. Yorkies are so much different and those normal shampoos groomers normally use on most dogs does not do well on yorkies. Also you need to be feeding a good diet - good food can also make a world of difference. I had been using one food for awhile and decided to change it up and tried another, worse thing I could have done. It did change the feel of their coats and shine was not as good as before. So I tried another better - higher grade - dog food, and the coats all returned back to a really nice shine and feel again. You just cannot subbstitute those higher grades of dog food for the lesser type. JMO |
My Rosies coat is exactly the same, looks kind off cute when she has that 'just got out of bed' morning hair, but it does get frustrating sometimes. Hers is very fine and slow growing but is getting there. She's almost 14 months, seams to have more coat comming through which also seams to make it stand out. |
topknot...I feed her IAMS puppy...started off with nutromax and switched to iams hoping it would make some sort of change...but nada. I use tropiclean kava on her which usually makes coats nice and smooth, but nothing I use changes it. I tried just using a nice oatmeal conditioner but that did nothing either. Ah! It's ok though...she pulls it off cause she is so cute, I am just worried that she has some sort of deficiency or something. |

It actually looks worse since he went for his last grooming appointment. I always use PetSilk on him but I'm thinking that maybe the shampoo she used stripped all the oils out of his hair? I have since bathed him with PetSilk shampoo and conditioner but it still looks pretty bad right now. I know some people say that they have a problem with their Yorkie looking greasy... send some of that grease our way! LOL. I almost wish I had that problem, Tobie's dry hair gets tangled and matted so easily. |
LOL!! Bring on the grease...Perhaps Ill make some bacon and let the grease cool and poor it on her mangey little butt! lol. God love her...she is still so cute...she just got a bath with only conditioner...yeahhhh, did nothing! haha. I dont think I would know grease on shea if I didnt bath her for a year...matter of fact I feel like the more time that goes by, the drier it gets |
Oh and Krystee, ps, at least Tobie has needed a haircut! Shea is 6 1/2 months and has not needed a cut yet! hahahaha |
