Needing advice Hi! new to this site. I have a 7 year old yorkie who came to me as a fairly traumatized little man. His first 2 years of life were spent on the end of a 16 inch leash attached to the bed leg. He had papers around him and his food and water. He was limited to this space most of the time as his owner was disabled and couldn't take him outside to potty or play. As you can imagine he was a neurotic mess when I rescued him. He had no idea what outside was all about, or how to play. He circled continually which he still will do occasionally. I have never been able to housebreak him and he hikes his leg on everything. Luckily I have laminate floors that are easily cleaned but doesn't help my other things. I have tried a belly band but he is always soaking through it even though I change it frequently. So I gave that idea up. Is there a better way to deal with this like panties like for bitches or something else someone can recommend? Thanks Melissa:animal36 |
I line my belly band with baby diapers, a size 3 cut into 3 works great for my lil boys. Just change frequently. Take him outside, without it (on a leash, so he know he has a job...and celebrate every "hyke") and when he is inside wearing the belly band, say "no" or "hey" when he hykes, so he knows there is a difference. So glad he has you. Good luck |
Im sorry I can't help you but I wanted to Welcome you to YT. It's the best place to find all the info you need for your baby |
Welcome, and thanks for taking this little guy in...patience....I am not a belly band expert and never had that problem. I bet if you take him out very often, praise, reward, he will get there. I was really mad when I started reading your post, and was ready to strap the owner to the exhaust of a tank, and then read that the owner was disabled. Too bad they did not look for a home for him them. |
Maxi Pads inside the belly band. Get him neutered - if he isn't already... Postive Praise and Yummy good boy potty treats. Peanut butter chips from the baking isle are a good hit ;) There are things like, the doggie potty - it is a dog turf inside potty system, and they even have a little fire hydrant, so you can train him to pee pee inside too! |
I agree with the baby diaper suggestion. I used it for one male that I fostered that seemed to manage to get his parts outside of the belly band. After trying a couple different brands I decided to try diapers. I purchased a size 2 (He weighed around 5 lbs.) and wrapped them around him and closed the tabs. They had velcro tabs and were easy to adjust if needed. They worked great and he was unable to manuever out of them. They were cheap ($6 for about 25 diapers) and disposable. |
Many people I know that use belly bands will line them with a women's panty liner. Those are less bulky but still absorb a lot. You might also find someone on ebay that sells belly bands to work with you and customize his so they cover more area! |
:wavey: Hello and welcome to YT! I hate to read stories like this. It makes me sad, but I am so happy he is with someone who cares and will love him no matter what. I have also heard if you put a poise pad in the belly band, it soaks up even more urine. I hope you can figure out a way to keep the belly band on him. I have seen many styles; maybe you just have to find the right one. Good Luck and I am happy to have you here. :) |
Several people have recommended the Poise pad, cut in half, and placed in the bellyband. Bellybands are only to hold the pads in place; they don't hold much liquid. They say the poise pads are made for urine, and hold so much more than a regular sanitary pad. I used the regular sanitary pad for a visiting dog, who has a problem with marking, but he was trained to pee outside, and I just took the pad off before he went outside. The proper bellyband should fit snuggly and holds the pad in place. Here's a YT member who sells bellybands. 2Parises Shop Comfortable Casual Style by 2Parises on Etsy Just wanted to say I admire you for what you are doing, I'm glad the little guy found a good home. |

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...-repeller.html This one has other options, such as the spray collars, you don't really need to know how to use it, the collar does the work. I don't think I would use a shock collar. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...dont-work.html |
