I cant believe she ran away from me ! I was about to take pixie out for a walk on sunday when she got loose. I thought i had a good hold on the leash, but I didnt and all she kept doing was run. I was running after her with the thoughts of her getting into the streets and getting hit by a car. Thank god i got her after a long run. I yell at her and for the first time hit her. My boyfriend was with me and when he found me around the block. He was like omg you caught her. Then out of no where I started to cry like a baby. I cried so hard it was crazy. I love her so much. You just never know how much you do till something like that happens. Now i know to keep that leash around my wrist real tight. |
I am so sorry you had such a horrible experience. I worry about Shelby doing the same thing because she does that *in* our house so much. I call her, and she thinks it's a game. Gets close, then RUNS! Very scary. I am glad you caught your baby and you are both okay. I would feel just like you do. These dogs are so fast! I need to work on the "come" and "stay" command and I appreciate your post b/c it reminds me how much work I have to do. |
That is very sad, I know you must have been very upset. I'm so glad you caught her, and she's OK. They are very fast, and we never know how fast untill something like this. I would work with her, or take her to a training class. Keep that leash tight on your next walk. :) Yorkies! Gotta Love Them! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) |
Oh! I'm so sorry that happened! I've been there and I know just how you felt. It's such a helpless feeling. If you have a loop on the end of the leash, be sure to put your hand through it and hold it with your hand just under the loop. If you don't have a loop, then make one. It's much easier to hold onto. You can relax now. Your baby is safe. They sure can scare you to death sometimes, though. |
This happened to Megan last week. Tucker pulled on the leash and took off. She was running down the street with Rusty. Finally, she caught him, but by the time she came home she was hysterical crying. It is very scary and you see your life pass before your eyes as you are chasing them. |
Oh It happens! When it happened to me,,, it was at night and I had him on a retractable leash,,so the plastic part hit the ground and scared him,, and he ran faster,, and it kep hitting the ground so he kept running, then he went under a car,, ( in an alley) and ran around the tires,, and was ALL TWISTED UP... I was fit to be tied,,then he was afraid of me,,cause he didnt know what was going on,,as Im under this persons car trying to get the leash undone,, the persons security lights came on,,it was crazy! I thought the owners of the car would call the cops, and tell them some crazy woman is out under our car!! Eventually, he settled and I got the leash all undone,,and we went home! WHEW!~~~ |
Im just glad you was able to catch her. you never know what these little burgars are gonna do. |
This has happened to me, I think we just expect them not to jerk the leash until one day it's gone. I taught mine how to heel or come. It works most of the time, but you are right, when they get it in their little heads to run, they think its play when you are running after them. |
Oh my gosh, I’m so glad you were able to catch her. I can’t even imagine what could have happen to her if you didn’t. I’m sorry you had such a scary experience. That happen to my Mom with her dog. They were out and Makia started chasing a herd of cows. My poor Mom followed her for TWO MILES before Makia’s attention went to a jackrabbit heading my Mom’s way. She hasn’t walked her since. |
Your experience was very scary  and I have had similar ones which is why I firmly believe that obedience training is essential for any dog, especially our little stubborn, head strong terriers. You don't HAVE to take a formal obedience class, although I would highly recommend it, but there are tons of ways to learn to train your dog yourself. There are books and lots of advice on the internet. The safety of our babies demands that we train them to come on command as well as to stay, leave it and drop it. :animal36 I know you hit her and yelled at her because you were scared and upset but hitting does not work in dog training any better than it does in training a child to obey. :thumbdown I am sure you did not hit her hard but you have to be very careful not to hurt these little ones. :( I am not a professional trainer but I have obedence trained all my dogs since I was 10 years old and I have five dogs now who are all trained as service dogs. I am always happy to help any member here who wants to learn to train their dog. Please feel free to PM me if you would like my help with anything. :) |

This reminded me of something I saw today as a matter of fact... thought it was pretty funny (talking about spanking/hitting/ spanking... and all) http://www.pagetutor.com/jokebreak/222.html |
Glad you caught her! I remember when Daphne got loose and she came SO close to being runned over by a state police-I actually thought she did and started dropping down and crying and screaming and turned the other way around. But she didn't and Im so thankful for that! |
I know you were so very scared and the exact same thing happened to us with our Jack Russell - only he ran for many many blocks before we caught him. We actually had to get in the car and chase him because we could not run as far as him. You are so scared and so when you finally catch them, the normal reaction is to spank them - and that is exactly what I did - but that is exactly the wrong thing to do. Someone had to explain this to me - when they run from you and you finally get them and you spank them, the next time they run, they think "I'm reallly NOT going to let her catch me because I will get a spanking" - the spanking works against you the next time it happens. And it can work against you in the house or in other situations where you want him to come to you - he may be relunctant because he remembers the spanking. This is where the great advice for training comes in - if you teach them to come, stop, stay, etc., with positive reinforcement, it will help in out of control situations. When you give them praise for coming to you, then they will be more likely to do so in a serious situation. Good luck! |
So glad Pixie is ok. Rudy is a runner, the door opens and he is gone. I have learned a door doesn't get opened unless I have the gates up or am holding Rudy. Like you I was lucky I caught him before something bad happened. You will never forget it, which in away is good, you now know Pixie wants to run free, but with her mom chasing her of course. The few times Rudy has got out, he always turns around to make sure I am chasing him. The little brat! |
