Heimlich maneuver? Is there a way to do the Heimlich on a Yorkie? Asia was eating lunch today when someone came into the office. She started barking at them and sucked up some of her food. She then started to choke. She managed to dislodge it herself before I could get to her, but it scared me to death. I was just wondering in case something like this happens again. |
Good question, I don't have the answer, but I'm sure someone will :) Hope she's OK. I'm glad you were there with her. :) |
Weird you should bring this up, because I had to do the heimlich on Scout this weekend. We were training in the kitchen, and Pippa barked at the door, and he tried to bark back just as I had given him a treat and was choking! Half a bark came out, then nothing! I put both my hands around his body near his chest and pushed and out came the treat! It was sooo scary-I'm a nurse-and I wasn't very sure it worked on dogs, but I wasn't about to not try it. Scout just went on his merry way like nothing happened! |
With these little guys, I recommend that the dog be held in the same position as a human baby baby.dog's back on your thigh and the head down. Hold the dog with your hands in its middle and your thumbs at the bottom of the rib cage or just above the navel. Use both thumbs and use a jerky type movement and PUSH quickly in that area. It has to be done so that the air is forced out all at once and that force should dislodge any foreign objects. Do that 4 times chek mouth and start again. If he dog is not breathing, you will need to clear the airway enough so that you can hold the jaws together and with your mouth covering BOTH the nose and mouth start blowing air gently til you feel the chest rise. Of course, no air will go in unless you can clear the airway. Your vet should have a print out that gives step by step instructions for the Heimlich and CPR. I have needed to do that a few times-as a matter of fact, that was a part of Jesse's problem that caused him so many problems with heart and lung failure and in the end, his death.. This is a good topic to discuss....Thanx for starting this thread.. |
Thanx for all the advice. It was just so scary. It would kill me if something was to happen to my baby. |
I know that feeling..We just love them so much that we want to protect them from every danger. |
