Jumping off the bed!
 

Hi Everyone,

I have a 15 week old puppy and she weighs 3.3lbs. I am so worried about her habits. She thinks she is a rabbit. (I swear!). When she is in the yard she likes to do a jumping run, and then when we get inside she jumps up trying to reach the bed (its funny because she is now where close to getting on my bed). So, I have decided to let her sleep in my bed since she has got excellent at her potty pad, and if she does have an accident she tires her hardest to make it to a hard floor. I let her sleep in my bed last night and I started to wake up around 6:30 the time she normally wakes up to look that she got down her self. I assumed she jumped. I know she jumped off because she had to go potty because I went into the bathroom where her pad was and sure enough pee and poop like a good girl. She was jumping trying to get back on the bed. She has jumped off the bed before, and I have a bed that isn't close to the ground. I worry she will hurt herself but she hasn't. She is full of energy running up and down playing with her roomie peyton (Caviler King Charles). She was just at the vet yesterday and was in perfect health decided being a jumper. Does anyone have any suggestions for this little girl. I can put in her crate at night, no problem she loves it but, I don't mind her sleeping in the bed with me. I have thought about stairs. Suggestions are welcomed because if my baby got hurt I don't know what I would do.

I would get stairs or a ramp...she will hurt herself or cause damage to herself if she continues to do this...

She's pretty small right now, so steps would probably be helpful, you don't want too much on their little joints. But once she gets a bit bigger, she would probably be fine. Your girl sounds like a smart little girl, using the pads so good!

I too have a jumper, she looks like she's on a trampoline!! I let her sleep with me too, however, when I get up to go to the bathroom during the night, i slip her into her crate and she settles right down. I also make sure that she's ready for a sleep before i keep her on the bed. If she's still in a playful mood, she'll jump down for sure. I guess this only helps if you go to the bathroom during the night LOL. Stairs sound like a really good idea, too.

Yes, you need to the stairs. They are plastic and easy to put together. They come with a fabic cover on them. You need to get them fast and do not let her jump off the bed, sofa, chairs. This jumping can injure her petellas as well as could cause a broken limb, or even concussion and death.

Oh how I would love to cuddle my girl at night!
I have a very high bed and very hard wood flooring.
My little girl is blocked to the kitchen at night for her saftly. I even tried the steps, she will use them to go up but jump down. As much as I would love to cuddle her, her safty is much more important.

There are some Dog Owner's that think "Jumping" is a cute "Trick or habit,
No matter what size your Puppy or Dog is......it is still "Dangerous"! Just think if you condone this? What's to STOP it from jumping out of the Car, while moving or even Parked still? Or jumping off of anywhere? After all in their mind
it's OK. with you to jump off the Bed or Couch, they don't know what is Safe for them or not? This Breed is Fearless.........you'll learn your lesson after they
break a Leg, GOD Forbid! IMO it's easier to buy a set of Stairs and start Training your Puppy to use them, better Safe than Sorry?:aimeeyork

I would definitely get stairs or a ramp. My Maggie is a jumper. My 2 were gated off in the family room and she discovered jumping off the back of the sofa! It's about 40" high! I wound up putting aluminum foil all over to keep her from jumping. she is now almost 2 and just diagnosed with a slight grade 2 lp in one knee. I have a feeling that the jumping highly contributed to it.

So please look at getting something so she will not injure herself in the long run. She sounds adorable.

Like the others have said, I highly recommend getting some stairs. I got a new mattress which makes my bed sit ever higher than it was before. She was somehow able to get on the bed if she tried hard enough but I never let her jump off the bed. I could see that ending badly. I bought some stairs and after a little coaxing and treats, she uses them no problem. It's actually really cute watching her run up and down them.

I agree with everyone else if she is going to be allowed on the bed, she needs a safe way down. We use stairs for our little one. You can find them online or in some pet stores. I had to buy mine on line to get them high enough for my bed and yet short enough for her legs. They are about 4 inch high steps and 5 tall. I don't remember where I found them, but I'm sure a google search will give you what you need.

Pixie is a jumper as well. I bought 3 step stairs for the couch and 5 step ones for the bed. Target sells some cheap and pet co. Pixie still jumps but not as much.

I think all yorkies have rabbit instincts..lol..My yorkie does the same...I did not end up getting stairs for him b/c he is afraid of stairs, so I taught him to either sit on the bed and we will help him down and if we are sleeping he licks us till we wake up...Actually not us, my husband..lol...Yorkies are soo cuddley like teddy bears....So much Fun!!!

I would so love to cuddle with my girl in my bed. The first night I got her she slept right next to me on my sofa (low to the ground) and didn't move an inch. I didn't get a good night sleep because I made sure she didn't move at all or get up. It was the cutest thing ever having a little fur ball all cuddled up to you. ;) However, it can be really really dangerous and they can very easily hurt themselves jumping from all different level heights even when just holding them. Especially with the little ones. I learned the hard way. I was holding my girl in my arms as I walked her down my front stairs of my condo building to go outside and she jumped right out of my arms and landed on the concrete. Fractured her tibia and fibula and needed surgery with an IM plate inserted. This happening only having her for a few days. I've also let her up on my bed (before her accident) and supervised her, but I could tell if I wasn't there she would have jumped off any chance she got and I have a very high bed with hard wood flooring too underneath an area rug. Maybe if it was only bed time and she was tired she wouldn't jump and just lay there, but still they can get up anytime and jump and while you're sleeping too. Just too dangerous IMO. I have 6 step stairs and just started letting my girl experiment with them since she's pretty much all healed up. She'll go up 2 or 3 of them fine, but then turns around to jump off (I catch her of course). Even with the stairs I'm scared my girl will ignore them and jump off things. I'm convinced she's half rabbit too. She loves to run and jump around and tries to jump up on the sofa. I wouldn't do it unless I knew my girl ONLY used the stairs to go up and down onto/off of sofas/beds and the like. Even then I'd probably put huge throw pillows all around the bed/sofa or whatever. When I go outside now I carry her out in her carrier and put it on the ground and then take her out of it. :)
