a heat hater?! Remy apparently hates hot weather I've had his coat trimmed down, is there anything else I can do? This is our second warm season together, and its just beginning.... Are there real health risks? (I am not leaving him in a locked, hot car - I'm asking about health risks for general, normal, responsible, and sane life circumstances...) He has water out all day, home and office, is not a big water drinker, just drinks after his walk in the AM and then randomly a bit throughout the day... He just seems sooooo uncomfortable, and today it was the first day we had temps 80+ Today I even put an ice pack down on the floor to see if he wanted to lay next to it - he just seemed scared of it and while he investigated a bit, would not lay next to it... So, what I am I missing? Anything I can do to make him more comfortable... Or, does he just have to "suck it up"??? |
Does he have a nice cool place to lay, like a cold ceramic floor or concrete? Reesie will lay sprawled out on his side on a nice cool place on the floor to cool himself off. |
Are you sure it's the dog that hates the heat and not you? We tend to put our own likes and dislikes on our dogs, and your little friend may not be bothered at all. What is the dog doing or not doing? |
Many Yorkies don't handle heat well. I try to schedule our outings around it. |

At the office he's on my desk generally all day - today he was laying right on the desk and my papers, not his little blanket Also, he curled up in an unusual place - a carpeted corner next to a credenza. He never does that.... |

He's just seems slower, more lethargic, and it seemed like he could not get comfortable all day. And at home tonight is just curled up fast asleep, not playing. That is unusual. |
Whew, it HAS been hot here, hasn't it? Don't worry, Remy... it will be back in the 50's and 60's later this week. ;) Jackson doesn't mind it but he tends to find a cool floor (we have tile) to lay on rather than his dog beds or my bed, plus I gave him his summer cut for the year and he definitely loves it. I think it just takes some getting used to. |

Bonnie doesn't do heat well either. She will lay on my lap for as long as she can stand it then jump up and run to the tile on the fireplace to cool off. She pants too. I keep Bonnie's belly shaved so she can soak up the cool on the tile. Also the concrete in the garage is really cool, no matter how hot it is outside. Last year I purchase a cooling mat. It is kind of thin, and you fill it with water. Not a lot of water, cause the jiggling would freak most yorkies out:rolleyes:. I put an old pillow case over it, the cotton is cool too. Ice cubes in the water dish also. Hope this helps |

I pushed the AC down at home when we got back and he hopped up on the arm of our leather couch, straddling it.... to watch American Idol with us... and stayed, that way, straddling the couch on his tummy for the whole show. Such a man... keeping the parts cold, jeeezzz ;) |
Mine is heat hater too...I've already trimmed Melba's hair. I'm afraid of heat stroke |
