The dental cleaning procedure in our vet hospital is actually done by a certified technician & an anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia & monitors the patient. They use isoflurane bc a tube has to be put down the throat to suck up all the water that's used during cleaning to prevent it from going into the lungs.

I'm wondering if there are different ways to anesthetize a dog like in a human? I've seen you toss around Propofol and Isoflurane as the drugs of choice so I am wondering if there are other drugs or are these the safest to use because it is all being administered by the Vet and there is no Anesthesiologist to monitor during the surgery.

another thing that is controversial about dentals is hand scraping vs laser and some feel the laser causes teeth to loosen so they ask for hand scraping which takes longer and keeps dog under longer. Our dentist does the laser but the prob comes in inexperienced people doing the laser as if they hold it on the tooth too long it can loose the tooth :eek:
