Please help me with Chloe' He is 2 years old. House trained and we live in a condo. I leave him alone when I go out in the laundry room which is 9x13. But I want him to have the run of the home he is good. My problem is he will not let me out the front door with out barking. When he's in the laundry room he barks but no one can hear him. I throw yummies on the floor and by the time he;s finished with them he's tired and goes to sleep. I do want to get a job where I will be gone for 5 or 6 hours and want him to enjoy all the space that I want him to have. Closed door for the bedrooms. Any ideas?? Thanks for your help |
can you gate off a section that is in front of the front door that he can't get in front of and you can step over? |
Hi Thanks for writing, Yes I can and will but he barks. maybe i will have to practice this when the neighbors are not around. |
maybe start out slow...and when he begins to bark say no bark and shake a can of pennies or even squirt him in the face with water from a water bottle....and if and when he stop barking give him a treat and praise like there is no tomorrow. repeat and hopefully he will stop barking on command |
I am kinda the last person to give any advice as I don't even have a yorkie yet, BUT there was a thread similar to this not too long ago and I think someone suggest practicing leaving with the dog. During the day when you're not really leaving, try going out the door for a few seconds then coming back, once they're ok with that making it a little longer, but coming back in a short time frame . . . Maybe someone remembers the post? The advice sounded really good to me! I think the goal was to get the dog to not freak out when you walk out the door. I'll take a look around and see if I can find the thread. ;) |

I would also suggest toys that really keep him busy. Make him work for his treats with toys where you stuff the treats inside. Kong has a great one and there are ball they have to roll around until the treats fall out. Also instead of throwing the treats on the floor try hiding them all around the area. Make him search for them. By the time he is done with all of these maybe he will be too tired out to bark and his mind will have been off of you for a while. I'm sure there are lots of good suggestions out there. Good luck. |
Maybe try leaving a radio/tv on for your pup during the time you are gone. The "noise" in the condo might comfort him a bit. Rose and Levi |
