Can I ever trust him? Ok so my 4 1/2 month old little boy jumped off the deck, landed in the azaleas and trotted off proud and wagging his tail. That was a 5 foot drop. He saw his "puppy daddy" leave the yard. I almost had a heart attack but tried to be calm and picked him up to inspect the damage. He was ok but I think he scared himself or he sensed my fear. He immediately wanted into the house but is going down the stairs now. The deck has about a 4 inch gap at the bottom of the rails all around. Do I secure it with something or just watch him? Do they learn their lesson? I certainly don't want any broken bones on my boy. Thanks. |
No, most of the times they do not learn their lesson... given the chance he may very well do this again... I would secure the area before letting him out again... glad everything was alright! |

Gotta agree with everyone - they're fearless I bet you did have a heart attack - I would have too - that's very very high for a regular dog to jump let alone a tiny yorkie - you were lucky the outcome wasn't worse..... not too long ago a very well known member here lost her girl to a deck......:( she was already a very grown yorkie and not a puppy - but impulses take over with these guys |

I just finished reading an article from Cornell vet school and their behavorists have come to the conclusion that dogs have the same mentality of a two year old. So with this in mind you have to baby proof your home as if a two year old lived there all the time. :D I and a friend put wire all around my deck and I have older dogs but I would rather be safe than sorry. |
Use lattice. You can have them cut it in half so it's about two feet tall instead of four, and line the perimeter of your porch with it. I did this with my fenced in back yard because there was a hole. It's kind of cheap, like $20 a piece, but if you cut it in half you have twice as much. We got the plastic kind so it won't wear with the weather. I'm so glad your pup survived that unharmed!!! |
I purchased a plastic-mesh at home depot and secured it with zip ties. It really put my mind at ease knowing the furbutts will be safe:) |

I stapled chicken wire around my 48 foot long deck - it was fairly inexpensive. I went from underneath to the top of the second horizontal rail. I was afraid my Mr.Darcy would drop between the deck floor and the first rail where there is a 5 inch gap. He jumped off the counter the other day when I was grooming him - he was gone in a split second- under my arm, and cried and almost growled when he first landed - scared the heck out of me as I know someone whose toy poodle did that and broke both her front legs...:eek: now I am hoping it scared him too, and he won't try a leap like that ever again! |
