Newbie Hello Everyone, Thank for having such an informative place. Q: How do u re-socialize a Yorkie that was bitten by a lab? How do you calm a Yorkie down during a barking fit? How do you get a Yorkie to just stop barking, especially at kids. Tobias was fine, until my neighbors kids started taunting him and stuff, so now whenever he sees them or hears them playing outside like screaming banshees he goes ballistic! I've tried, spray bottles, laying him in the submissive position, scolding, whatevers . . . The only thing that works is when we're home I put him in an empty room or in his kennel and shut the door. But when we're out, this isn't always available to us. Help. |
#1- Welcome to YT #2- you should never EVER put your dog in his kennel as a punishement as that is supose to be their happy place to get away whenever ever they need to... it is their cozy place and if you associate it to a bad thing he won't like it. #3-to make your furbaby use to the neighbours kids I would go over there and talk to them with Tobias and let Tobias know them and be more confortable with them? and let the kids know to stop taunting him..lol #4-There is different method to stop the barking, one is the penny can, the other one is basicaly getting them distracted from wha makes them bark. I leave the radio on all day for Bailey when I am not home so she is use to hearing random noises. I don't have the best answers for teh barking as we are working on bailey right know as well but it is consistency and patience that seems to help. For re-socilalizing Tobias around other dog is to bring her places were there is other dogs. Start with your friends who have dogs and that are friendly and you know would NOT harm your baby and try to get Tobias use to it and bit by bit you can go to larger breeds and eventually she will see that not all big dogs are mean. I have never been in this situation so I am sure someone else will have better advise. I wish you the best of luck and cannot wait what other yt members will post... I love this site to I learned so MUCH!!!! :) good luck :) |
1. Thank you 2. No worries, i hardly used the kennel as a time out. It's been a yr or so since I last used it, I just put him in any rm by himself. 3. My neighbors hate us. I've asked them nicely to trim their trees that are butting up against the house and they said, "ok" but it's been a month. The dad doesn't like dogs and is very passive aggressive. I talked to the mother, she was ok, but kinda distant. And it's hard talking to them when your dog is yapping and going agro. Lastly, if they can't control their kids and teach them manners, i doubt they'll ask them to behave around my dog. 4. I've tried noise makers as well and i'm not a fan of those shock collars. Any other tricks? Thank you for your care & concern:) |
I have a sonic sound remote?? it basicaly lets go of a sound that only dogs can hear and it gets their attention...and it is a remote so I can push it whenever I want to. no collor involved?? there is quite a few difference of opinion on this though. I only use it maybe once a week I willl not use it if she barks once to let me know about something. I will only use it is if she is barking excessevly for no reason. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...-repeller.html above is a YT discussion and opinions on it. |

If you're not home and he was inside - why would he be barking or can he see them from inside the house ? I would try to keep him inside when the kids are out or TRY to hang out there with him holding him while he slowely adjusts - some yorkies are just yappy so it may not help .....but putting him in a room by himself isn't going to help either - he doesn't know why you're doing this I wish I had better advise but there's alot of people here that will have better |

"but putting him in a room by himself isn't going to help either - he doesn't know why you're doing this" Oh but he knows. He ALWAYS knows when he's done something wrong. Sometimes he does things intentionally to get ur attention if you ignore him too long, hahaha. Like, running to grab a sock, bringing it to your attention and then as soon as u look like you're gonna chase him, he takes off to his favorite hiding spot under the bed. Where he instantly gives up;D Don't let those cute lil, big eared, big brown eyed fubabies fool you. hahaha. After the age of 1 maybe 2 they know what's right and wrong. :aimeeyork Tobias knows, that putting him in the room is a timeout/punishment for barking. B/c as soon as I pick him up his barking eases up and then when I set him down in the office or somewhere he instantly stops barking. He doesn't even move. I say, "No, no barking." with a stern voice waive my finger while I do it, so there's an action associated with it and leave him for maybe 5 mins. If the kids are outside, as soon as he comes out of his rm he runs upstairs and starts barking again. So I "try" to be consistent and repeat this till he stops. It usually takes 3 tries. But when we're out in public, picking him up doesn't ease his barking at all. It's gotten to the point that I'm a lil nervous/embarrassed to take Tobey out to restaurants or out door malls b/c of all the kids and ppl passing by. He used to just sit in my lap or make zero noise;( I miss those days.:animal-pa:( |
