can my 6month old yorkie play with big dogs? my friend just got an alaskan malamute puppy and it's already bigger than my puppy romeo. i was just wondering how big my puppy's playmates can be |
I have a 5 month yorkie and he plays with a miniature schnauzer (who is about 20 to 25 lbs). He seems to play with him just fine.. however I personally get nervous when he is around anything larger than that. |
There's no "rule." It's whatever you're comfortable with. Of course, always be cautious. Bigger dogs, especially when they're puppies, sometimes don't know their own strength. But if they grow up together it's usually fine! Jackson gets along great with my grandma's 90lb Lab, and my aunt's 70lb Pit Bull. :) |
thanks! |
I think it all really depends on both of the dogs. My brother has a full grown 140 lb doberman and he gets along so well with my little 4 lb yorkie. However, neither of them gets along with my sister-in-law's 10 lb dachshund or 100 lb boxer. There's no telling who is going to get along with whom, you just have to be careful and keep everyone on a tight leash and in neutral territory until they're comfortable with each other. |
My mom had lost a dog to cancer when I decided to surprise her with a Yorkie from the same litter as mine, when i went to get mine. She still had a dog at home, a 1/2half chow 1/2german Sheppard. Not sure of the weight but huge.. She is the sweetest dog in the world, so I wasn't worried. They immediately got along great, Cassie (the big one) thinks shes his (bear) mommy. they are inseparable!! Good luck! |
I don't know maybe it's just me, but I'm always afraid to allow a small dog to play with a big dog. It only takes one time and your baby can be dead. Whether through accidental play or just all of a sudden a friendly playing turns aggressive. I honestly, believe that small dogs should not be allowed to play with bigger dogs. Just my .02. Elaine |

Our doggie daycare lady has 2 american bull dogs and they are both great with my little guys, and and younger one will lay down to play with Nala, it's adorable!!! That being said, you could have a playmate the same size as your pup who just doesn't work out. Pick your playmates carefully, and when there's a large size difference just be that much more cognizant when watching them. |
I guess i interpreted the question wrong when I first answered. I was thinking in terms of living in the same household. However letting my baby play with another dog that belongs to someone else and there's a big size difference..That's very different. I would be very leery. I didn't even trust my 8 yr old niece at Christmas to the point I was hovering over her..lol |
I usually talk to the owner and ask how the dog is with other dogs. Most Yorkies haven't got a clue they are small dogs, and treat other dogs accordingly. Ruger plays with lots of dogs much larger than he is, but unless I know the other dog he's usually on a leash. BTW, Ruger tends to be the dominant one regardless of size. |

The only bigger dogs I let my two play with are my sisters two english cockers, Alfie thinks he's above their antics but Rosie loves to play with them, but only ever under supervision. Its so funny as my sister will send her two onto their beds then Rosie will start wriggling all over them. On days when we get to walk them together Tilly will stop and check on Rosie, nudging her with her nose to encourage her to keep up, so cute. |
I never allow my little ones to play with the big guys. Even with close supervision, all it takes is a split second for a playful large paw to come down hard and possibly do some damage. |
I agree with what several have already posted on here, it is what you feel comfortable with... My baby plays with my sisters labs, and although it makes me nervos when is is with her male lab, he has a tendance to snap at him, and he does just about every time we are up at my sisters, I just keep a close eye on them when they get to playing a little to hard and step in between the big male dog and my baby when it calls for it. |
Morgan actually hates small dogs - so I go to playgroups with her at our vet where I know that the dogs are taken care of. |
