What if I have to go to the hospital Hi all, I've never had to think about this before, but at this point in my life I find myself with no support system nearbye. Hope it does not last forever, but I had been thinking while taking care of my dad, who has dementia, "what happens if I get sick and have to go to the hospital?" My family would probably be able to take my dad or he would have to go into a home, but my babies, what would become of them? There would be no one to care for my two loves. They would surely die. Cassie is 2.5 lbs and Muffin is 3.5 lbs. They are so tiny and now I am very worried about what ifs. I have no neighbors that I am close to as everyone is very insular here. My family is far away and does not like little dogs anyway. I'm not sure what to do. What do other people do? Does anyone have any suggestions? Any suggestions welcome, Thanks, Shellie |
Where do you live? Maybe there is a Yorkie rescue near by or someone who has Yorkies that would be willing to take them if you ever needed to have someone take them short term. I would do it if I lived close, but I have a feeling I do not. |
I agree with the above post. You live in Temecula, California? I am sure there are quite a few members here who would be willing to help you out and watch your babies for awhile if something serious happened! |
Hi...sorry for butting in...I haven't even done an introductory post yet, lol. I'm in the UK so things are probably different but I do know where you're coming from. I'm 'divorced' from my family and live several hundred miles away. When I was pregnant (single at the time) I had a collie cross and was so worried about going into hospital to give birth and leave the dog, and I didn't want her to go into kennels. I even fought tooth and nail for a home birth so that I wouldn't have to leave my dog on her own, but that went wrong and I ended up in hospital for 6 days. BUT, I found an agency which looks after animals in their own homes. They will come to your house as often as you like and can often do short notice in emergencies. I had a word with one and they came round to discuss things in case I ended up in hospital, so I had it all in place. Surely you must have such agencies over there? If so, I'd email them with your concerns and have a word with them to see if you could put a back up plan in action in case of emergencies. It's definitely a bit concern and one that I'm sure a lot of people have to face at some stage. Have a google and see what comes up in your area. |
you could try and find a in-home sitter but i would find a yorkietalk member nearby and get to know them and thear pets really well so that if such a thing happens then you have a buddy to call who would love to take care of your babies for a few days or a few weeks |
If I recall correctly some of the pet insurance policies provide "care" provisions offering a certain $$ threshold for pet care should you become incapacitated. Obviously that may only offset the expense associated, not provide you the answer for how that care is offered. But it could be a financial aid if you chose, for example, to have the pup boarded |
I would put money aside for their care, with well written instructions, whether it be a sitter OR making arrangements with a Local Reputable Yorkie Rescue (bonded pair, must not be separated, etc....) |
Ask your vet techs if they puppy-sit. I just found out today that all of the vet techs at our vet's office does. They charge $20.00 per visit and $30.00 for an over-night stay. That way you will be comforted knowing that someone with a medical background is watching you babies, in case of an emergency. |
Thanks for all your wonderful replies. You've definitely started me thinking in all kinds of directions and I'm so very grateful for all of you in our amazing Yorkie Talk Community. What would I do without you guys!!!!! You've all helped me so much in so many ways, I don't how to begin to thank you. I think getting to know Yorkie Talkers in my area is a fantastic idea and a great first step. Anyone in Temecula or Murrieta California???? :-) Also I might ask some of the people that work for my holistic vet if they could help out if I am not able to care for them for awhile. emergency care wonderful suggestions! Your vet will probably board them if necessary.. A nearby vet school/vet tech college may have petsitters available Please have emergency info available in you wallet and also posted in your home that says your dogs are alone in the house and an emergency # that can be notified if you are unable to speak... The poor creatures would be taken to animal control and this is only if the neighbors noticed them in the house.... roxanne |
