He is so adorable! Did your vet really say "ugly stage?" I consider more like a geek or akward stage when their legs start getting longer and they and they grow into their ears etc. Your baby may be on the smaller side of the yorkie breed, do you know about the parents? Because it's only been a few days you still need to observe and get to know his eating habits and what food works best for him. He may just have a silky coat opposed to a thicker cotton coat. Just keep him on a quality puppy food, observe and get to know him and be sure to post any questions. |
Arabella's doggy doctor told me to free feed her. She always has a full bowl of kibble and water for her to come by and graze. We also give her a few more treats than what you should, ok not doctor prescribed but she is so darn cute. She did gain weight and she is holding her own now. I am sure more experienced YT will chime in soon. |

But nobody else. The father of him was very small and silky i did'nt see the mother ,the father was 2lbs,, but i want him fatter. |
I think he is adorable! Try free feeding, If he is meant to be small, he will be small, as long as he is eating normally. You wouldn't want him to get to chunky for his size either :) |

I hear ya, when my guy was 2lbs I was a nervous wreck, always scared he would get hurt! I hope your little one gets a little bigger! Maybe you will get some more suggestions on what to feed :) |
Are you just feeding him kibble? I always have kibble down but at night I open a can of wet food (same as the dry food) and split it with six dogs...they gobble it down. You also might try wetting a little of his dry food to see if that makes a difference. Did the vet really look into his mouth..could there be problems with this teeth? If all else fails send him to me..I know how to fatten up dogs...:p |
If you really want to put weight on him I would try wet food for maybe one meal a day and/or a little nutrical here and there. For the coat you might try a good shampoo and see if that helps. As to what is a good shampoo I can't tell that yet. I am new to Yorkies. I just started with Splash and Shine. |
I hate to be a downer here but has your vet run any bloodwork on him? Low weight, difficulty putting and keeping weight on a dog, and anorexia are early signs of Liver Shunt. LS is so prevalent throughout the breed that really all Yorkies should be tested for it, regardless of them showing any symptoms, as many do not show any indications of having it even when they do. To put weight on a dog, start by feeding a regular diet, 2 -3 times daily. I leave kibble out too, but with regular mealtimes, they tend to look forward to it and may eat better, and just snack on the kibble as they want throughout the day and night. Also, find a nutritional treat to give him between meals. I can manage my older dog's weight by regulating treats alone. If that doesn't work, I would increase the amount of his meals by 20%-25%. If that doesn't work, I would decrease the amount of each meal, and feed an extra meal during the day. (go from 2-3 times to 3-4 times daily). You have to really play around with different methods to find out what's most effective for him, and still feasible for you to accomplish (depending on your personal schedule). One of the best things anyone can do for their dog is to give them Probiotics with enzymes. These work in the intestines to break down the food consumed and turn it into more readily available nutrients that the body uses for replenishment and growth on the cellular level. It keeps the good bacteria in the intestines built up for optimum digestion, and prevents bad bacteria from taking over, which can cause vomiting and/or diarrhea. It can also help to increase the dog's appetite. Good Luck, and let us know how he does! |
