How do know what kind of coat they have? How can you tell if a Yorkie has cottony or silky hair? Aiko's coat was buzzed cut when we brought her home so I have never seen her with long hair. Her hair is nice and thick, and is getting a nice shine too it thanks to the high quality diet we have her on. But I am kinda scared about growing it out, because of matting. Anyone know how I can determine if its ok to grow it out? Or should I just do the whole trial and error thing and just wait and see? |
I'd say the only way you can tell is to grow it out. It's so hard to tell by looking at pictures. Now, this is my opinion only, but to me a cottony coat feels like velvet and a silky coat feels just that - silky. Not much help, am I?:D |
doesn't it have something to do with the eye reflection color in pics? Silky reflects green and cottony reflects (I forgot) red or gold??? and puppies always reflect blue. I haven't gotten a good pic of Katie at night with flash, but I think she is cotton. Her hair grows fast and is very fluffy. After I used a good conditioner on her, now her hair is very soft and easily brushed. But I still would not consider her as "silky". Now Uni is a silky for sure. Slow growing coat, and thin hair. Hardly mats. |
this has always confused me too  Thomas has a wave..but then maybe because he Hates to be brushed? But he never mats. When he went to the groomer she was surprised he had no mats. He IS for sure..a rotten mess! |

I should have added that is what the article said, but I don't even remember the source now. Perhaps you could find something different. |

ok thanks for all the answers! I think she feels more like velvet than silk. She is soft, but her hair is very short so its hard to tell. I guess we will wait and see! |

Prince Henrys hair is starting to look scraggly and dry... He is 7 months old and someone told me it is good to buzz cut them to get thier hair to grow in thicker... Is this true? |
I'm bumping this, 'cause I wanna know if cutting short helps it grow out thicker...Miss Apple Pudiny Pie has very thin hair, and I was thinking about cutting her "skirt" off, to see if it might thicken up...I'll be watching this thread... |
I'm not sure, but I doubt it. Hair has mostly to do with genetics, not products or the way you cut it. I mean products can help, like conditioning, etc, but the actual thickness and amount of hair, I doubt you can change. Just like people hair. I have tried all the products you can imagine, but nothing makes my hair look thicker. |
