Hello... My new puppy is a teacup yorkie and he is 2 month old ... all he do is sleep is this normal ... he looks alil sad ... also i work 8 hrs a say is it ok to leave him alone with lots of toys :(?? any advice worried... |
how much does your "teacup" weigh? i would not leave my baby alone for that lonf even if she was 10. There is no such thing as a teacup yorkie you'll find that out here quickly so just drop that term breeders that breed there smallest dog together to create the "teacup" size are usually just in it for the money i hope you didnt pay more for her status.... having a smaller dog can create all sorts of health issues for them...its kinda like having a very premature human baby lots of hospital care underdevoloped and so on and so forth but to answer your questions babys sleep ALOT my baby is 4 months old and she sleeps more then a cat do not leave it alone that long find some other way and go out TODAY if you can and get a tube of nutrical follow dosing directions but do that asap!!!!! |

When a pup is that young and small, he needs close supervision. Do you have anyone you could ask to look after your baby while you are working? |
see if you can find someone to puppy sit for you why you at work ... are start looking for a play mate so he not alone :D |

These babies are prone to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) so they need to eat more frequently. What are you feeding him? Do you have any Nutrical on hand? He's still very young, and they do sleep a lot at his age. |

Even with a good food, nutrical is a good idea to have on hand, he's just so little. |

Welcome to YT so glad you found us. :) Your little guy is very young so I could understand why you would be worried about leaving him alone while you are working such long hours. He is too young to be taken to Doggy Daycare for that is not even an option for you until he is fully vaccinated at about 16 weeks. Could you possibly pay a neighbor to come and check on him during the day? Do both you and your husband leave at the same time or is there an overlap so he is not left quite so long. Puppies will sleep a lot they are just like babies and being that he is only 8 weeks old he is pretty much a newborn so it is to be expected. You are feeding him a decent food so that is good. He should go to the vet in the next few days to be examined to ensure that he is healthy too. As others has said it is very important that he eats and drinks for that he does not get hypoglycemic which is very dangerous. Really is does not matter if he came from a pet shop or from a breeder at this point, it is just good that you have found YT so that you can have help if you need it. Do you have him in a crate or an Xpen? How do you plan on containing him while you are at work? An Xpen is wonderful it allows them to move around and also be contained for their safety. |
i have alil crate but i have a long empty hallway and thought of leaving him there where he can walk around and also leave his bed there and lots of toys and his food and water but i'm not sure is this is ok to do? I work from 8 to 6 .. should i give him milk? |

To the OP, X-pens are the best! They really offer you peace of mind since it keeps the pups (both young and "grown up") from getting into to much mischief. |
Hi....I got my yorkie when he was 12 weeks old and he weighed 2.2 lbs. My vet thinks he'll get between 5 and 6 lbs at maturity. He will be 6 months April 13th and now weighs 4.3lbs. He's very sturdy and strong. No-one ever mentioned he was a teacup. Does anyone know at what age they stop growing? Thanks for the info |
GiGirl, don't give him milk. He cant digest it well, and it will start diarreah that will be hard to clear up, and the dehydration could make matters much worse. Stick with what he is eating. You can soak it in warm water, grind it up in the food prcessor or blender and add water to make a 'mush'.. don't give him people food. When you DO go back to work, yes, a bigger area than a crate.. he can't be left in a crate for 8 hours. You will need to babygate off a safe area with food, water, bed, safe toys, and a potty pad. If you can have a neighbor check on him during the day, that would be great... pick up some nutrical or nutristat at your vet tomorrow. He'll need it 2x per day minimum for the next month...morning and night. He will need to see your vet for probably 2 more sets of shots spaced about 3-4 weeks apart. He will be around 7-8 lbs as an adult based on his current weight, so will be a good sized, sturdy yorkie hopefully sooner than later. Best of luck, and if you have more questions, please ask! ;-) Quote:

Hello and welcome to YT. I had that problem with my Holly when she came home I think it's the change Max should be fine. Natural Balance is great food so I would not change it. I worked next to Natural Balance and I know what great quality stuff goes in it and I am so confident that I tried their treats and taste just like veggie cookies. LOL |

jeje thankss soo muchhhhh for ur advice.. |
Just wanted to say welcome to yorkie talk! You sound like you really love and care for Max a lot! Just to reiterate what someone said above as a word of warning...don't use the word teacup! It isn't an official term for starters and what some breeders use to sell their puppies and it will get a whole bunch of people jumping down your throat! It's a negative buzz word on YT! If he came from a litter with tons of brothers and sisters he will be adjusting for starters to being without them! So spend as much time with him as you can and when you can't be there the best possible solution would be to see if someone could watch him for you these first few weeks! Baby yorkies are very fragile! My little guy would have his blood sugar drop and salivate to the point his entire throat would be wet anytime I would leave! And blood sugar can drop at this age even if they get upset! We ended up getting Louis a friend 2 months after we brought him home and that did a world of good! It sounds like you are doing the best you can and you should be commended for asking for advice and help to give Max the best care possible! Just be on guard for anything you can do to better help him adjust and I'm sure the pros will be on shortly to help out with fantastic advice as well! Hope to see you and Max around YT and if there is anything I can help with don't hesitate to PM me! I don't know all the answers either but I can try and point you in the direction of one of the pros! Have a good night! |
Hello and welcome to YT! So...I haven't read all the replies, so this might be there already, but... You've been pounded with the "there's no such thing as a teacup" a lot I'm sure, but it really is just a marketing ploy. Also, 8 weeks is much too young to leave mommy and siblings! Poor little thing...Irresponsible breeders!!! (not you, the breeders, please know I feel no animosity towards you :)) I would definitely keep nutrical on hand, just in case. I honestly would also take as much time off work as possible, because 8 weeks is so terribly young. I got Joey at 12 weeks and Tank at 17 weeks, but I did leave them at home alone for about 6 hours per day when they were that young. I free feed, so they constantly have their food available (so we don't worry about hypoglycemia). They are locked in our extra bathroom while we are gone, so they have space, but not too much that if there's an accident we won't find it. Really - they do just fine being alone. we do have some anxiety issues with Joey, but healthwise, they're totally fine. Some people I think are with their dogs 24/7, but for many of us, that's just not possible. My husband and I both work, and our boys are typically alone between 6 and 8 hours per day, depending on the day. We don't work weekends, though, so they're generally with us all day on Saturdays and Sundays, unless we are out to dinner or something(we don't bring the boys, of course). I wouldn't worry about finding a new home for your little one, I think if you can just get through the next 4 weeks, you'll be just fine :) I wish you the best of luck, and if you'd like to talk more, feel free to pm me!!! |

Also, my boys are full grown and are 5.5 lbs (Joey) and 4 lbs (Tank). We were VERY naiive when we got Joey, and he was sold to us at a pet store as a "miniature yorkie"... They stopped growing at probably 14 months or so, I would say...Joey is 22 months and Tank is 17 months old... |
