Is there any way to really tell if yorkie is age breeder says I know this is strange but we just got a new boy and he should be 21 weeks old. He was born 10-31-09 and is only 2 lbs 3/4 oz on the scales at walmart in the produce section. My question is he is very quiet and mellow and likes to sleep alot. He is eating wet food and drinking but very mellow. Any good ways to tell if he actually is this old? |
you weighed your dog on the produce scale at Wal-Mart?! Anyway, weight says nothing about age really... a vet could probably tell from the puppies teeth. |
OMG! That is funny and strange all at the same time! Has your little one been to the vet yet? They should have the answer to your question. How long have you had your furbaby? |
i have just had him a day so its very early i know. I am going to call the vet Monday am to get him checked out. I have a girl that is almost 3 he just seems so much more mellow than her at that age :). |
Can you post a pic? A puppy at 5 months would look drastically different from a 6-week-old puppy. It's not the best indicator, but there is a vast difference in appearance. BTW, Congrats on the new baby :D |
Welcome to YT! Hope your vet can answer your questions and give your little one a good going over to put your mind at ease. You should be able to enjoy your time with the little guy instead of having that nagging worrying feeling in the back of your mind! Please don't take this the wrong way, but please please don't weigh your puppy on the produce scales. He could be shedding any number of parasites that you aren't aware of and people do use those. They have scales in the kitchen section that are under $15 and weigh from 1/2lb to around 10lbs. :) |
I cant find my camera charge therfore cant take a pic right now. Can you give me a little info on how different they might look being younger as compared to 21 weeks. I totally agree with you guys i def should not have weighed him at the store and I am going to buy a small scale or better yet take him into the vet as soon as they have an opening. Thanks so much for all the replies. |
Its kind of hard to explain... they begin to look more like a yorkie and less like a guinea pig as they get older, :p Look through the nursery here... some of the breeders post updates on their litters with pictures... you could try and match up a specific age with how your yorkie looks now. Do you think the puppy is older or younger then the breeder said? |
younger if anything he just seems so small and mellow. Loves to sleep. His hair is fairly long and the top is breaking color the gray is coming in. I know that is not a good indicator as some break earlier than others I am just overthinking im sure. Still would like to put my mind at ease. |
I honestly don't know if that is a good weight for that age; wish I could be more helpful. My little man is barely 3 pounds at 3 years old, but he is a rescue/rehome from a member of my family and they bought him as a "teacup" from a byb. :( |
I questioned the stated age of one of my Yorkies, took her to three different vets and they all said essentially the same thing: There is no way to tell the age with any certainty. Yes, they could say this dog is between 2 and 4 months, this one is between 6 and 10 months, this one ...etc...but no one could narrow it down to an exact enough age to matter, i.e., is my puppy really an 8 week old puppy or is she 12 weeks old based on her gait, teeth, etc. Only time will tell as they've all been surprised at the different development stages some puppies go through. (The reason I questioned her age, despite AKC registration papers was "at the time" she just seemed younger, her walk, she seemed a little "short" rolly poly tummy, etc..and I wanted vet's opinions...having coupons for free checkups at two vets plus my regular vet gave me the opportunity to ask about their opinion of her age) As it turned out she is a little shorter than my other Yorkie...go figure, like kids, she's just different in little ways. |
Well, all I can add is my Shay is a lil bit over a yr, and is finally 3 pounds whohooooo!!! (sorry it was a big accomplishment for us) and he is and always has been very mellow, he is a sweetheart, I think like kids your going to get a different personality, with each lil furbaby... Good luck, can't wait to see pictures, and hear how the vet visit went! |
Did you get papers with him? Has he started to lose his baby teeth, they start doing that around 5 months. He should have shot records that indicate how old he is. |

if you did get AKC papers, you can look up the litter and the parents, also call the vet where she had taken them, if you have the shot records. If you don't have those things, I would be calling the breeder and asking why you don't have all that info! when I adopted Shay and Bella, I got all that info, in nice folders, with a whole lot of wonderful info. and advice. |
