When is the "right" time?!?!?! We've been looking at Yorkie's for a while. I've looked into different ones on petfinder.org. I thought I wanted one that's already trained but many of those are puppy mill dogs. Since I have 2 daughters, I don't want to get one w/issues! So now I'm looking at getting a puppy! So I don't know to get a girl or boy! Then I'm not sure if I should get one now....or this summer! I'm a teacher! The original idea was to get one the end of May. Well, now...I'm not sure! We're supposed to go on vacation June 12.....so if I get one in May it's going to be so small when we go on vacation....or I'll have to wait until late June and that will cut down the amount of time I have left at home until I go BACK to work!!! I plan to go look at some puppies tomorrow but now I'm not sure! I can't cancel so I'll go look one way or the other...just not sure if it's the right time to get a puppy!!! HELP!!! Also, do I crate train or use the pet exercise pens? Ahhh!!! |
My opinion is you should wait until you have the time, which seems like that will be in June after your vacation. You can spend this time preparing for your puppy and doing research of what a healthy Yorkie is suppose to be. There are many post on this site to inform you about what to look for when it comes to Yorkies and there are puppies listed for sale or rescues too. Patience is needed when selecting a Yorkie. Too many people get caught up in the desire stage and end up with a poor choice because of not having patience or doing the proper research. I joined YT and waited 6 months before getting my baby Cerise, because I needed to make the right choice for both of us :) |

Welcome to YT from one Alabama native to another! A word of advice, which it sounds like you are already aware of. Please please PLEASE be very cautious when looking a pups in your area of the state. There are so many shady, puppy millers there that it's insane! (I actually ran across a lady years ago there that kept "about 50" (her words) dogs in an old chicken house on her property!) I would definately wait until after your vacation to bring a new little one home. When they are young, they need a very calm, stable environment while they adjust. During your teacher's summer break would be a GREAT time to get one though as you will have more time to work with the new little one. Good luck with your search! |
Good for you for taking the time to think about this. How old are your daughters, by the way? Yorkies are generally not recommended for households with small children, first because they are fragile, and second because they can be a little snappy. Have you thought about contacting rescues in your area as well? They may have a well-adjusted adult waiting for a good home! |
