Yorkie chases the cat :animal36I have a 17 year old cat, he is very agile and can get away from Yorkie but I don't like him chasing the cat, :mad: how can I stop him doing that. My husband says he doesn't do it while I am at work and he is at home looking after them, why does he do it for me?:aimeeyork I do punish him by putting him in the pen for a few hours, but this doesn't seem to be working, most of the time they are OK it is just when Yorkie gets a bit playful, and thinks the cat might like to play with him. Perhaps the Yorkie chases the cat because he's jealous of your attention? You've been gone all day, and then when you're home, he doesn't want to share you with Puss. Maybe you need to give him a little more attention when you first come home, and he wouldn't be so jealous, be more willing to share you. By the way, it's not my place to say, but I think a couple of hours in "time out" is a very long time for a dog who only wants to spend MORE time with you ... it's a little (lot?) counterproductive. |
Mine does this also, but she is just trying to get the kitty to play. Sometimes the cat will play and sometimes she will just run off, or jump up where sofia can't reach her. As long as she isn't hurting the cat, I see no problem, I let them work it out on their own. |
I believe you answered your own question. He wants the kitty to play with him. Instead of further isolating your yorkie from the "pack," why not get on the floor and play with him yourself or take him for a nice, long walk? He has probably built up enough energy during the day and is so happy by the time "the rest of the pack" has come home that he is trying to stir up some excitement.:D |
My girls torment my cats so I made them their own safe haven, I gated our spare bedroom and that is their room when we don't have guests. I put their cat nib toys in there and bought them their own comforter to destroy. They seem really happy with their new living quarters. |
