I for one would not take a chance in putting my yorkies in harms way. I've seen to many incidents of horrible accidents happen to yorkies with collars. Yes, my dogs they have dog license....and it is required by law for them to have them, but they are on their harness when we go out in public, not on a collar. My show dogs, well for obvious reasons, I have in an envelope in my grooming bag..... Dog license is required by law, however, when one is intent on taking your yorkie....they'll just take that collar off. I have nothing on my dogs that identifies them by name.... |
I have a collar on both my boys... Even on Nicky who is my yorkie, it is one that is meant for little dogs. It isn't a break away and I am able to get my fingers under the collar so he can breath and not get caught in his collar... I however use a harness on Nicky whenever he goes outside. The collar is only for his licence and id tag. Nothing else!! He does fine with it. In Pennsylvania you have to have your doggie licenced when they are 3 monts old!! |
Tucker only has harnesses, he is definately a puller. I wouldnt dare to put a collar on him he hates them anyway. But I just tag his harness, i have heard to many horror stories from using a collar. |

Many of our members have had tragic experiences with collars, especially with tags hanging down. Whether or not the collars are properly fitted will not prevent tags from becoming caught in a floor heating vent, a chain link fence, or even more tragically a paper shredder. |
In the UK it is a legal requirement for all dogs to wear a collar and tags when they're in public even if they're microchipped. My last yorkie hated a harness but was very happy with her collar. She never pulled and never had a problem with it. I will try Tilly in a harness for walks, though, but she'll still have a collar but it will be removed when we're home. |

 A "D" ring on a harness is the only thing I will put on my Yorkies. I just wouldn't take a chance at all! Collars can shift & move depending on so many factors and it's just not a risk I'm willing to take with little Yorkies. Crosley is almost 18lbs and she does wear a collar, but we still only walk her with a harness. |
If dog collars are so dangerous, why are they still being sold? I have never seen a warning label on a collar stating the dangers they pose to toy breeds. The title of the post is, "Can Yorkies wear collars?" not, SHOULD Yorkies wear collars. I maintain if the collar is properly adjusted, there is minimal danger to a pet. If collars become tangled up while two dogs are playing, then at least one collar is not properly adjusted. A harness is more likely to get snagged or caught up on something since it has way more straps and surface area. Just because one owner has a bad experience with a dog collar, for whatever the reason, does not mean all dog owners should not put them on their pets. People die and are injured from airbags and seatbelts too. But all new cars have them. D'oh! As for some of you folks giving me eslaps to the back of the head, for being "rude" with my eyerolls and "D'oh" postings, I love you too! :p Did I strike a nerve perhaps? Only the TRUTH hurts you know. I find your logic as funny as your retorts. Now do me big favor and go kiss your dog in the mouth! ROTFLMAO! |

I'm sure we could go on all day about products that aren't always safe that are legal to sell. I still maintain that wearing a collar is a risk I'm not willing to take for accidents and/or damage to their trachea. I'm just as if not more concerned about the damage wearing it can cause. |

Chili Dawg....I want to say this nicely but why all the sarcasm ? there's alot of people out there who really don't know of the 'what if's' and while collars are sold why take a chance with such small dogs ? Larger dogs have different muscle structure and aren't prone to Collapsing Trachea like small breeds...it's just a fact that yorkies are in that catagory - so even if what's being said isn't your personal feelings - don't discount all the others who feel differently - or at least try to not make fun of people who dont use them ..of course you're entitled to state your opinions but most of us try to do it with a little more tact - you never know who is reading yes ? |
Collars or harnesses I put a message n here about things to put tags, they snap on the harness like a collor snap or harness snap, this way you can change the collor of harnesses, it is great, I have one and I love it, you can get it a Petco ot Petsmart,I think I got mine at petco. |

I was in a bad car accident when I was 18, the only reason I'm alive is because I was not wearing a seat belt. That doesn't mean I don't wear a seatbelt on a day to day basis, in most cases it is effective of saving a life and I've been in car accidents since where wearing a seat belt was to my benefit. Sure there may be some risks associated with collars and small breeds, but there are risks of having no collar. With everything else, you need to weigh the risks & benefits for your personal situation. |
Just to add, It is my opinion that all small dogs should wear a harness on walks. My post refers to wearing a collar in general. |

dog collar I DON"T care what anybody else thinks or does,I wear a harness on my girl and would never think of putting a collor on her at all, when I take her out she wears necklaces, omly when I am with her and she is always supervised, plus I have a zip pet dog stroller for her when we go on day trips and she loves it.She would never be pulled, especially in crowds.Everyone is different, but thats what I do. |

I don't think you struck a nerve here, but I am growing more concerned about your own nerves after reading your last paragraph, above. Btw, I actually think that lies hurt way more than truth. Asking me to kiss my dogs on the mouth is no favor at all, so I would happy to - at least I can help you there. For the record, btw, I do use collars on my boys - and this is a *risk* I take (they are chipped as well). Living in metro Phoenix, I feel it's the right thing to do, for now. So anyway, here are the YT Rules for your review. |
