Megansmomma just retrieved her 3 quickly this morning due to collars:

http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...hree-gone.html

I have to say this makes me reconsider my previous no-collar preference.

Yes, I was very lucky and thank GOD they all had on a collar with engraved tags. I don't know what I would have done if they were not all found so quickly and returned to me. :(

I just think there is a real difference between a genetic collapsed trachea, and the dog, through an accident, collapsing his trachea.

Your entire response was a contradiction in itself. :p You state you can't find anything saying it's anything but genetic, then go on to discuss how there is a difference between genetic and accidental CT and how a collar could cause CT... Which basically sums up my point and what many others here were discussing, sooooo....thanks! :D

Hmmm...maybe where you live that is what is required, but the requirements vary from state to state, county to county. So that's not necessarily the case for everyone.:)

Where I live, it is required that your dogs have a current rabies vaccination, but they are not required to wear the tags at all times--you just have to be able to provide proof that they've had them. They issue a certificate with vac/exp dates that have a picture of your dog on them AND tag. My 3 have collars, with their tags on them that they wear whenever I have to take them somewhere, but they are never on a leash with them on. (2 of my 3 woudln't even know what to do ifyou put a leash on them!) Our hound, who spends more time outside in our yard, wears her collar 24/7 with her tags on them.

I think this is really just one of those issues where you need to be aware of all possibilities and best judge what you think is right for your situation yourself.

I so glad Megansmomma got her babies back, but I still think you can use harnesses for tags, I don't understand why some people think only collars will hold tags. Many harnesses take up no more space than a collar would. For those of you who haven't seen the Buddy Belt Harness, it's a wonderful product.

Most folks don't leave the harness on 24/7 though, therefore if the dog wasn't wearing the harness when lost, tags on it would be useless. If you dog wears a harness all the time, then yes, it would totally make sense to just keep tags on the harness. A collar doesn't bother Jackson at all that I can see, and the harness he is usually okay with it on for a while, but I can tell sometimes he wants it off (he wears Chattiemoms harness, so thankfully the silk makes it more comfy).

You should probably get a license, the law says:

If the dog is not wearing a tag, the dog shall be destroyed, unless legally claimed by the owner within two (2) days. If you have a license, they will try and contact you, and this gives you 5 days.

Under RABIES TAG DISPLAY and Davidson County Ordinance it says:

Maybe that's only for those in Davidson County? Here's the link: Tennessee Dog Laws

Here's more information from the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Vector Control Program

Ok. From what I can understand, TN leaves it up to each county to regulate animal licenses...My county does not issue dog licenses, however, a rabies vaccine is required. Does that sound right?

Yeah that's what it sounds like. It' is possible that your county doesn't require a license, but I would be worried about my dog getting lost and them only holding him for two days. Usually if a rabies license is required you need some sort of official license to verify it. Does you county have a website? By the way, when I was researching Tennessee laws, so many places thought the term "dog license" was a "breeder's license", and used the terms interchangeably. So you want to make sure they know you just want to register your dog. :)

Off topic, I LOVE that haircut! :) So adorable. Is the hair on the feet cut short? Left long on the legs down to the feet and cut short on the feet? Thanks.

Thank you, yeah, the feet are cut short, sometimes it looks like he's wearing little boots. :D

Oh, I assumed they were one and the same thing. I've never heard of having to get a 'dog license.' Just rabies vaccinations here.:)

Don't you need to renew your license even if you haven't renewed your shots? We have to renew the license every year.

What license? When they get their shots, they also get a certificate, with their picture with the vac date, exp date, and a tag. That's it. They don't get anything else at all until the next time they get shots. And I've never heard of that piece of paper being called a 'license.'

But you know, they only recently started here with the 3 yr shot, so maybe it's different now? Mine have not had one since....guess I'll find out in the next month, eh?

Hmm...I'll scan one when I get home...

Oh well if they give you a tag, at the same time you get the shots, I guess that would be the license. We have to send paperwork with vet's proof of vaccine to the county Animal Care & Control, who then sends us a bill for the yearly price of dog ownership. Two different prices for those dogs spayed/neutered and those who are not. After paying the fee, we get the tag. Each year they send us a renewal bill, and tags are replaced. We don't really get a license with his picture or anything, just the tag. :D

Are you serious!? You get billed by the county for owning a dog!? That is insane! I have never heard of such.

Lol, I can't tell if you are serious. I think the money is used to provide shelters, and other important things.

No...lol. This time I was being dead serious. I have never heard of anything like that before. Just seems bizarre to me. We don't pay the county a dime for anything for our dogs. We pay for vaccinations at the vet's. That's it. No annual fees due to the county for owning a dog.

Actually, I think it's pretty common in the more civilized areas of the country. :D

Over here we have to pay too. it is through the county, and for altered pets it's $40 and for unaltered it's $100. That's if/when you get the rabies vax at the vet, and they are required by law to fax in the paperwork to the animal control or whatever and they either come to your house (my case they did) or send you a bill. After you pay you get a crummy sharp edged ghetto looking tag for "identification purposes". If you don't pay, they slap you with a $175 mom compliance fee. If you never get the rabies vax in the first place, they will never know you have a dog, and thus never send you a bill. unless of course you have a horrid neighbor who likes to complain about people.

I guess the idea is to tax those who create the need for dog pounds and dog catchers, but really they should be taxing CAT owners!!!!! By the way, in AZ it's only $17 for an altered dog, I think it's close to $100.00 for unaltered. The elderly get a tax break though, I can't wait! :D

Nancy, do you think harnesses like these could be worn for a few days at a time or would they need to be taken off regularly? After seeing Jodi's thread, I'm seriously thinking about keeping something on my pups all the time but I don't really trust collars, and with 7 pups I don't want to have to take them off each night and put them on every morning. Just trying to think of a good compromise for us.

I really think they could be worn all the time; it's not that much different from a collar, it just goes around the legs instead of the throat. I've never had a problem with tangling or mats; the leather is super soft. The best part is after 3 years it looks like new.
