Chlorine/Bleach making them CRAZY???
 

Ok so I've noticed something...Ruby tends to go crazy after we've mopped the floors she has regular access to with water that contains a small amount of chlorine/bleach (all the soap stuff for mopping contains it here in Greece, don't know about the US). I mean she gets the 'zoomies', aka runs around like crazy, barking and being, generally, very very excited!

Has anybody else noticed this? Is she like, high on the chlorine smell? (it isn't that strong you know...I don't notice it!)

Or does she just think the mop (which she regularly 'attacks'!) is...playtime?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolle yes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolle yes::rolleyes:

I imagine it's the mop that gets her started. She gets wound up and then the zoomies probably ensue.:D

I am sure she thinks that you are just there for her entertainment!:D

Hmm...perhaps it is the smell I don't know...I can't catch it though...I make sure it's not strong so it doesn't bother her anyway...;)

I swear she has a grudge with the mop....All those 'tentacles' get attacked eeeevery time she spots it :p:eek::p

The chlorine level in your drinking water should not be a problem. If, however, you're adding extra bleach to your mop bucket, it may be irritating to her nose. Chlorine is a very potent gas - it WILL kill - so it may be bothering her.

If she seems to be reacting to her drinking water, find out if your water system is using chlorine alone or something called chloramine - that's a combination of chlorine and ammonia, designed to have a longer "life" in the pipes, preventing bacteria for a longer period of time.

If they're just using chlorine (and she's reacting to it), you have several relatively easy options: get a filter for your water faucet to filter the chlorine out before it hits her water bowl. Or, get a water pail that you dump and refill daily. When you add the water, stir it up pretty vigorously - this will help the chlorine to "gas off", and within 24 hours it will be gone. This does not work with chloramine (the bonded chlorine/ammonia), only chlorine. Or, buy her bottled water.

The above methods are the easiest to deal with, but there are other methods, such as adding the chemicals used to treat water before it's added to fish tanks.

However, hopefully her drinking water doesn't bother her, and she's just excited at the sight of the mop ;) :D

Does anyone know if using Murphy's Oil/Soap on your hardward floors would be harmful to Lucy?

This is what I regularly use (when I don't just use water).

Also, I buy Lucy distilled water - which was recommended when we found she had a mild case of MVD. I swear she drinks more water now. I think she likes the taste of it.

I have a whole-house water softener that takes care of stuff like that before it gets to the taps, but then I have a faucet filter for drinking water/cooking in the kitchen, which also covers the water demands for the 4-footed in my household. When we go out, they get bottled spring water, just like *I* do. I like to maintain a certain consistency in their food routines, so if something goes wrong, I can narrow down the field.
