ollys nik nak removal, what can i expect?
 

olly is being neutured on wed, is it a quick recovery like my little girls was? The vet mentioned keeping him calm, fat hope with that , its play,play play with Tia at the moment lol

Jackson was pretty much 100% by the 3rd day. The day I brought him home, he was really groggy and on pain meds... so he pretty much slept the whole rest of the day and night. The next day, he got up feeling alot better already... still a tiny bit groggy (he was on pain meds for 5 days, but didn't really need them after the 3rd) but moving around fine. It was hard to get him from jumping on/off furniture for a week because I didn't want him to open his stitches but we could through it just fine! He never wore a cone or anything.

Short of crating him, there's not much you can do to keep him calm. The vet may (will?) probably give you some pain meds for the first day or so, which should slow him down a bit.

Puddie was "done" around 9:00 in the morning; he was home by 4:00 that afternoon. By the next day, he was pretty much his ol' self again. I have stairs for those in my household who are - shall we say? a little short in the leg! - so he didn't have to jump or anything. He was 5 months old at the time.

Boys seem to be easier than girls ... after all, it's abdominal surgery for them, whereas just a snip and judicial application of surgical glue for the boys.

I have never had a dog that it bothered, they seem to get over it pretty quick.
My last 4 dogs have been males and all has gone well. My little Cooper will be next and I can't wait cause he is starting to mark and I don't want him to start doing it in the house.

Down time for a boy is less than for a girl.....that is if internal surgery is not required (only if testicles are undecended - cryptorchidism).

What should I expect then? Both of my boys are cryptorchidism. They will also be having baby teeth extracted and Diesel has a hernia, too that will be fixed.:eek:

How old are your boys?

8 months old. My vet was waiting to see if they would descend. She was also waiting for Diesel to grow a little more. He finally weighs 3.7 pounds. Woo-HOO :D

Was Diesel the one that had the intestine issue?

But, if should either or both require surgery.....either with one or both to be removed.....I'm sure your vet informed you that she'll have to go via the abdominal wall to remove them. Therefore, because of the stitches and incision...you will have to restrict their running, jumping, etc. for about 5 to 7 days. Your vet will prescribe pain and antibiotic meds. The pain med will assit you in keeping them down.

Of course I remember. I don't always have CRAFT disease. He was a special little guy....meant to live....only the strong survive.

Honestly, not to scare you but my usually calm laid back boy let his dark side come out. He never barks, never ever howls, never does anything. The day I picked him up he was groggy from the anesthesia, and all he wanted to do was sleep. The next 3 days were a complete nightmare as he would howl, jump up and down in his pen, all things he'd never done before and the worst of it was at night. In hindsight, I think he was in pain and I was told to only give a pill a day and I think by night it had worn off and he was in pain, itchy, and he didn't know how to make it go away, so he acted out. That only lasted 3 days and then he was back to normal. The worst part during those 3 days wasn't the lack of sleep, or the howling and barking, it was not knowing really what was wrong with him and feeling powerless. I didn't know how to help him.

I don't think mine was a typical experience. Most after neuter threads I've read the only problem they've had was keeping their baby calm and not jumping and playing. I hope yours is much better than mine, but if your pup lets his dark side out, just remember, you did this for his well being, it'll only last a few days and then you're cuddly baby will be back.
