Getting Two Puppies In May we are getting a male yorkie who will be about 20 weeks. My fiance likes cavalier spaniels. I heard that getting two puppies would be helpful because the dogs may be alone three days a week. Does anyone have any insight how the two breeds will do together? Also would you recommend a male or female? |
My 8 pound Yorkie gets along wonderfully with my sister's Cavalier who is on the small side but still growing. They have the same energy levels and are the best of friends. Both are lap dogs, but love to play. I think it's a good match, of course every dog has its own personality. |

If you have a large dog, you will need to watch your Cavalier puppy carefully while it is small. Many Cavalier owners report that they have trained their dogs to live happily with hamsters, gerbils, rabbits, and the like. (In households where no one is home during the day, the companionship of another dog or a cat is highly recommended.) |
I haven't been around many Cavaliers, but the ones I have been around were friendly and didn't tend to try and dominate. Since terriers can tend to want to be alpha, a Cavalier could be a good fit. As far as gender goes, since you are getting a male Yorkie, I would get a female Cavalier. I think they will get along easier if they are opposite gender-wise. Just get your Yorkie first, and neuter him, then get the Cav. No need to chance getting those hormones going (easier if he doesn't ever start marking in your home) or even an accidental pregnancy. |
I used to have a ckc and she was exactly like my yorkie. My ckc had a problem though and would chase lights and reflections so it literally drove her nuts. make sure you ckc pup comes from tested parents. Their hearts can be bad. Its very common in that breed. Be very careful. Other wise I recomend the match. But becaredul too that they don't bond too much because they will likely attach to each other and not you guys. Thanks so much, your input has been very helpful! I never thought of them bonding with eachother too much, that is a good thing to keep in mind. I mainly was hoping they could keep each other company when I'll be at work (3 days a week at most). |
