Barking at all other dogs when walking? Need advice!
 
Hi Everyone.

Max is now 15 weeks :) and we have just started going on our first walks together, he is wonderful on the lead but when we meet other dogs on our walks he barks and growls and then backs away. At home he never barks and only growls when playing tug o war!

It was suggested by a dog trainer I met at the park that I don't reassure him when he is doing this but say a firm 'NO' which I have tried but no progress as yet.

We have puppy training and socialisation starting in April but wanted to get others advice as I don't want Max going through this everytime we meet a dog and just want to see him enjoy his walks!

The breeder I got him from had both of his parents and another dog aswell as cats and I got him at 12 weeks.

Any suggestions anyone has would be brilliant! I'm willing to try anything!

Layla does this too and she usually pulls while she is barking. I correct her (tug on the leash) to bring her back beside me and then keep walking. I am of the Casear Millan school that she needs to know I am in control and thus she does not need to protect me by barking. It is going REALLY well- she still tries to pull but her barking has gone way down. I think once you start the socialization classes things will improve as well.

Teaching the "stay" command is vital. When walking him, and you see another dog coming your way, get him into the "sit and stay position". It helps if you have one of his favorite treats in hand. Keep telling him to stay until the dog has left, rewarding him while you are doing this.

After hearing no over and over again, dogs just become inattentive. However, if you train them to do something, to be productive through commands, then it activates their minds and keeps them involved in what you are trying to get them to do, and not what they want to do!

I am a firm believer in teaching through positive reinforcement, it has always worked for me and the pups.

Thanks for the advice...very useful. Will have a try with what is suggested!

I am hoping the socialisation will help improve things too. :)

I am totally 100% for positive training and use it exclusively while training Jackson tricks. We make it fun, positive and exciting.

But I feel in certain situations, everything can't always be happy and dandy. For example, my dad's Jack Russell mix... you could have the best real meat in the world, her favorite toy, anything... nothing will distract her from barking at another dog. Nothing. She needs a quick tug and an "ah-ah" to snap her out of it.
