First night home Some advice would help here. Just brought my little Deuce home today. He's 16 weeks. I have two concerns. He has not gone potty. I can't tell if the pad's wet or not. We've been taking him outside and I don't think he knows what grass is so that's a bit confusing. Secondly he's crying and barking in the pen. Right now I told him we'd go on YT to get some help and he's a happy little baby lying in my lap. I know this is not a solution. Thanks for your help. |
Not an expert but considering you brought him home today, he's probably just unfamiliar with the new environment. As for the crying and barking, unless he's sick or something like that, he probably just wants to be let out and play or something. Not sure about how much you'll let your puppy get away with in the house so starting him on certain training might be a good idea? And of course, the vet visit. Don't know when your puppy's last visit was but I think it's a general rule of thumb that you take them to the vet ASAP to make sure everything is ok with them. Hope this helps. |
Oh how I remember our first night with Zeus. I was so nervous. I think he took a little time to potty too. No worries just make sure he is eating and drinking. He is going to cry when you put him in the pen. You just have to make sure he has gone to the bathroom where you want him too and then let him cry it out. It is going to be hard but he will learn. This is our Yorkie-Westie cross crying in her crate in the dark on her first night home with us (she was ten weeks old). It was extremely hard, but she became adjusted quickly and is now a happy five month old puppy. |
haha - I shouldn't have tried to watch that :p- BOTH my girls shot straight up in the air looking all over the place for the upset puppy....I had to shut it off right away as far as the new puppy - He's in new surroundings - new everything.... so not going to the bathroom is pretty normal - I only have my 2 girls so am no expert on puppies but make sure he drinks & try to get him to eat and let him adjust at his pace - can't help you on the crying cause I caved with mine good luck and congrats on your new puppy |

Not sure what to tell you about the going to the bathroom thing, Sophie Kate has never had that problem (trust me). Crying in the crate, been there and the best thing to do is let him cry it out - well at least that is what I was told. It took maybe two nights and she was fine. Now Sophie Kate is old enough she is in our bed but when she was a baby it was the crate. I made it as comfy as possible for her, she has a sherpa pad, her fleece blanket and her nyla bone in the crate (Sophie still goes in the crate when we go away). You may want to research crate training for potty training, it helped with us a lot. The trick I learned was to make the crate nice and comfy for them and they will treat it like their home. |

I was told by a trainer not to put a cushion or blanket in the crate while potty training my puppy because she might pee on it. She said only do this until I'm sure she won't have an accident in her crate, then I can put a bed in there for her. What do you think? |
I can only speak from experience, I always put a pad of some sort in there for her to sleep on but I was careful not to let her stay in the crate long enough so she had to pee in there (it happened but only few times). We had a routine, the minute she came out of the crate she went outside to go to the bathroom immediately (in fact I never let her feet hit the ground). When she did go outside we would have a huge celebration with special "potty treats" and lots of cheering. It took some time but she eventually got the hint and now she is almost fully trained. The problem I have with Sophie is she does not tell me when she has to go out so we keep a pretty tight schedule of no longer then 4 hours during the day. At night she holds it up to 7 hours but again, the first thing in the morning she goes outside. When she did have an accident in the crate I would always wash her pad right away and make sure the crate and pad was clean and dry. Not sure about the advice of no pad, maybe others can give feedback also. |
We started off putting beds in Morgan's crate, but then decided to keep swapping old pillows. So everytime she went potty on her pillow, it went to the wash and got replaced. She soon learned to stop so that she had something comfy and clean to sleep on. We also put a towel in there as well. I wouldn't recommend not putting a pad in the crate - the puppies need somewhere comfy to sleep. ;) |
We're still trying - 3rd night 2nd night was not too good either. But I did discover as I almost gave in at 4 AM that he want's to know I'm nearby. So I put his blanket in a laundry basket and pulled it next to the couch. I was able to put my arm down and stroke him to calm him down. He slept and stayed in there until the alarm went off at 6. I forgot it was Sunday. Actually he didn't get up when the alarm went off. Today I made his crate comfy and got him to go in by himself. He napped in there several times during the day. Tonight we're going to put the crate in our room and hopefully he will sleep in there. I have work in the AM. I am a bit tired. I'll keep you posted. It appears that all the new sounds in this new environment get him fired up. Last night a siren woke him up. He's a country dog learning to live in the city. |
I listened to it with Deuce and his head shot up too. I had to quickly shut off the sound. I wonder what the puppies wail? m |
