Dog gate recommendation? We'll be getting our puppy mid May and we're starting to get everything ready. We definitely need a gate for an ackward opening (which we'd also like to use down the road for a baby) and I think I've found one but I'm a little concerned about the height. This is the gate, it's 21" tall. I've never had a Yorkie before so I'm really not sure if he'd be able to jump over it when he gets older. I'm hoping someone here might be able to answer that one for me. Thanks! Richell USA Wood Freestanding Pet Gate - Gates & Doors - Dog - PetSmart |
21" isn't very tall, except by then, hopefully your pup will know that s/he's supposed to stay behind the gate, not get over it. But they're very determined. However, if you're looking for double-duty for a skin-kid down the road, it won't do at all. Babies would get over/around that gate in a tick-tock. You'll need something more substantial, and a bit higher to use for both. |
That looks like a great gate. There is really no way to know if they are going to be jumpers or not. Neither of mine would jump over a gate and yet, my previous yorkie would jump from the back of a couch and land in the middle of the room. Or I'd walk in and find her sitting on the back of a recliner. She gave me a heart attack more than once! But she would never jump over a gate! Anyway, I don't see crosswires on that gate that they could climb up on, either, so that's good.:) |

I frist started out with a gate that was 18 inches high and Pixie was jumping it at 3 months so then I went to a different gate that was 41 inches high. I also had a problem with her squeezing through the sides of the gate. I swear she was an escape artist. The only thing that saved me was her ex-pen she could never escape out of there. Pixie is now 7 months and she still goes in her ex-pen when I go anywhere just bc I can relax and know that she is not getting into anything while I am gone.
