Good coat products My yorkie Reese is not a show dog so I keep her in a puppy cut. But I think I'd like to let it grow a bit. her hair seems a little coarse compared to the silkies. So I'm wondering what type of shampoo and conditioner would be good for her. Right now I'm just using some shampoo for long haired dogs and Perfect Coat leave in conditioner. But her skin seems dry. Lately I notice a lot of dander when I brush her. Is that normal for a Yorkie?? Should I be putting oil in on her coat? I read somewhere that people use coconut oil but I'm not sure if that's just for wrapping. Or do I maybe need to brush her more or maybe even change her food??? Any help would be great. I don't know much about Yorkies as my other dog is a Cockapoo. I took Reese from a friend who couldn't keep her so I'm learning as I go. Oh, and she's 10 months old. |
Hi and welcome to YT! Dander generally isn't a big problem with yorkies, so it could be the products you're using are drying out her coat. Unless you are growing her coat completely out you shouldn't need to oil her hair. I use coconut oil but am using it in my dogs food for it's many health benefits, although I've heard of some using it on coats. How often are you brushing her now? Also, always use a coat conditioner (can be watered down hair conditioner) sprayed on before brushing...never brush a dry coat. What are you currently feeding her? A good quality food is necessary for healthy hair, just like good nutrition for people is required to have healthy hair. With hair care products people have their favorites for different reasons. You'll find numerous recommendations for products here. If you can, get samples of products you see and hear about. At least then, if you don't care for the product, you're not stuck with lots of half used big bottles. Currently I'm using Iv San Bernard products and have been thrilled with the results on my yorkies and other dogs. I only notice the dander when I brush her but it's A LOT! I brush her pretty much every day but I THOUGHT I was using a pin brush (which is supposed to be good for her coat) and I just found out that what I'm using is a slicker. Can you tell I'm new to this?? She just eats Beneful because that's what my Cockapoo eats. She probably needs something with more protein. She used to eat Eukenuba but when I gave her that and gave the other dog Beneful, she would go after his food. I do have a supplement paste. Wonder if I should give her some just to give her a boost and change her food. I do condition her hair before I brush her (using Perfect Coat for long haired dogs), but I was using it full strength and then today I read that I should be diluting it and misting her hair. Of course, the spray bottle I bought is not a fine mist. |
