Visiting my Parents Hi everyone! I am visiting my parents in the states for 5 weeks later this year. I am of course taking my little Hepburn with me as 5 weeks is a long time to be with a sitter and he's still a puppy. I was wondering what you all recommend as to introducing Hepburn to my parent's two dogs. I grew up with the two dogs and I have to say they are not that well trained and they are occasionally hostile with each other. One is a wire hair fox terrier, Gibson, and he tends to be a little more docile, but Copper, the welsh terrier, has jaws of steel and bites at even people that come near her food. They both have some food guarding issues. I am concerned that they will gang up on Hepburn, but I am the pack leader in Hepburn's world and my father is the pack leader at my parent's house, so how does that work? My parent's dogs don't listen to me, so I am worried that I will not be able to keep them away from Hepburn and my parents are not really going to do too much (they spoil both dogs, feed them cookies all day and they are both overweight, they took them to training class and ignored everything they learned and the dogs have free run of the house and the yard with no boundaries) I love my parents and their dogs, as they were mine in a sense, but I don't want Hepburn to be traumatized by a bad experience and lack of training in the 5 weeks that I am there. Any tips? |
Be protective, a big dog can damage a Yorkie beyond repair, unintentionally. I would keep them separated at first, monitor their behavior and go from there. Never leave your Yorkie unattended with other dogs near by. They are too small to defend themselves in most cases. Good luck and have fun in States.:aimeeyork |
How are you flying your Yorkie to the states? Have you checked out all the requirements for bringing in a dog from out of the U.S.? Here is a link for more info. http://www.cdc.gov/animalimportation/dogs.html Good luck |
yes I have and they are not strict I have checked, the requirements are simple: have a valid rabies vaccine and a proof of good health within 10 days of flying. The airlines often want more than the US government. It takes more preparation to take the dog back into Germany than it does to get him into the US! Germany wants a blood test to prove that the dogs has the correct antibodies in his blood to prove that the rabies vaccine worked. Taking him in to the US is no problem at all. |
and as I read your link, it actually only says the dog must look healthy and have a rabies vaccine. The health certificate with 10 days is for the airline I am flying on. So its even less than I just said! |
