Our baby is SO anti-social! Jax is almost nine months and is so unsocial with other dogs. He wants almost nothing to do with them and acts so scared around them. We were definitely planning on socializing him once he was fully vaccinated but he was sick with a URI (among other things:rolleyes:) for several months so we chose to keep him away from other dogs. Now he is in obedience training and we brought him to a "puppy social hour" today. After a little butt sniffing he wanted nothing to do with with the other puppies there. Even when one would try to paw him or sniff him he would jump back and cower between our legs. He is just like a little wallflower. :( I just do not get it because he LOVES people! Has anyone else had this problem and had their babies get over it or are we doomed because we have waited too long to begin socialization? |
When I brought my yorkie home she was very anti-social, in fact she'd growl at any of the dogs that came near her. She'd been an only dog in her previous home and wasn't used to having another dog around. She's 2 years old and within a couple of days she was trying to play with the other dogs, even the ones bigger than she is! I wouldn't say all hope is lost, sometimes they just have to adjust themselves to their environment and it can take some time. |
I have one the that is the same way. Sydney is from a puppy mill. She was the only one in the litter. She likes to be my herself. She would be just fine if no one outside the family touched or talked to her. Emmie is from a lady that raises yorkies in her home. Everyone has to talk to her. If people walk by and don't talk to her it's like hey I'm here. She always wants to lay with or on Sydney. I personally think it has a lot to do with where they came from and how they were raised before you get them. Sydney is 6 and nothing has changed. Good luck with your baby. |
Bailey can be very anti-social. She seems to have a way of picking what dogs she's willing to deem good enough for her to play with. But, most of the time, she is very snobbish...but she is almost 2 and hasn't played with a lot of other dogs. She is only 3 pounds, but prefers to play with bigger, much bigger dogs than herself. |

I think some Yorkies just prefer people. There isn't anything wrong with that. I understand owners wanting them to be social with other dogs but some Yorkies are anti social and snooty. The are truly a unique and wonderful breed for human companionship. |
Rocky is like that too, he is 3.5 years old. I took him to several Yorkie get together, many other dogs, small and big. Nothing works, he hates other dogs, loves people. He only tolerates one Yorkie I know, but he never plays with him or anything like that. |
I never had this problem, Jackson would much rather be around dogs than humans, lol. He just *loves* other dogs to pieces. He always looks so happy and proud prancing around the dog park. But I do think it's something that needs to be learned. I think you're doing good by bringing him to the Petsmart classes, etc. He should get it eventually. |
when igot karma about a week ago, she was the same way. now she plays with my cairn terrier just fine. she still barks at my border collie though, but my border collie could care less. i think mazy the cairn made karma feel better by always bugging her. |
