Question About Puppy Coat
 
Hi! As many of you have read in my previous posts, Chloe is our first Yorkie. We got her when she was 12 weeks old. Her coat was pretty smooth when we got her but lately it has started to change - as it is growing the ends appear to be wooly, black and wavy while the new growth appears to be dark grey (blue) and silky. Is this normal. Will her coat always be the texture as the ends of her puppy coat, or will it eventually all turn to the texture of the new growth. She is almost 5 months and her head has all turned silky. Both of her parents were silky, but the breeder did tell me that as a puppy her daddy had hair that would tangle. She said it completely changed when he was about a year old. When I met him he had the most beautiful coat ever. Thanks for any advice!

If she has a true silk coat it will not be the same texture as her puppy coat and eventually all come in.

Thank you. So no puppy is born with a silk coat... the puppy coat will be a different texture. The reason I ask is because an ad has come out in our paper that advertises 7 week old yorkies who have a silk coat. My breeder who has many years experience told me that alot of times puppy coats have no reflection as to what their adult coats will actually be.

Your breeder's correct.

I have been told the earlier the color breaks on their heads is an indication of a silk coat. Also the color reflection in flash photography is another. Green means silk...gold glow means cotton. And lastly a pup who retains black at the temple will have a cotton coat.

Thank you. Chloe's head is pretty light in color - I read that this light color should turn gold - and the texture on her head is totally different than it is on her body. Her eye reflection is definitely green... in photos and even when the light hits her. I was just confused because I have heard so many things. What about the waviness? Will this get better as the hair grows out?
