Newbie Introduction & Walking Question Hello! I'm a long time lurker (well, two months) and a second time poster on here. There's some great threads on here I'd like to chiming in on, but I thought I'd introduce myself and Indy a little first. My husband and I had to be very picky on which breed of dog we were going to get, so I did a ton of research before we got her. After weeks of reading, the Yorkshire Terrier came out as our top choice. Indy is so much fun. I've never had a dog before and am smitten with her. She's just over 4 months old and we got her when she was about 9.5 weeks old. I do have a question for all you Yorkie experts: I love to walk, and when Indy was done all her shots I started taking her out for walks (with her harness, of course :P). She is great on her leash, but she never seems to tire while walking, though she will nap when we get home. At four months how much is too much walking? I'd hate to accidently wreck her growing bones and set her up for future problems. Thank you. - G 'n Indy |
Welcome to you and Indy! I think by listening to Indy and following her cues she will tell you when she has walked too much. I started walking Zeus when he was young and I would walk him 2 times a day for about ten minutes each. Then mid day we would walk to the bus stop to get my kids which was a five min. walk. As long as it wasn't too warm he did great. Now we walk an hour in the morning and 20-30 minutes in the evening. Start small and gradually increase your walks. I always carry water for Zeus on my walks to keep him hydrated. |
Welcome to you and Indy both!:) Don't worry about tiring her. She's young and has tons of energy. Exercise is good for them and helps their organs to work well. She will "tell" you when she is tired. Generally, they will look up at your face or do something that will tell you they're tired and want to go back. Eventually, you will "understand each other" better and when she communicates with you thru looks or body language, you will understand when she is tired. |
Welcome to YT! I agree, she will let you know when she is tired. I have hiked with my Simon for years and we will go miles. Hallie doesn't care too much for the great outdoors so I have a sling carrier and when she gets tired she plants her feet and lays down refusing to move another step, that's when I put her in her carrier and Simon and I keep going :) Have fun walking and continuing to be smitten with her~ |
Bet she can walk further than you can!!!!! |
Thank you! This is all a relief to hear! I'll keep walking her and pay attention to her body language. Thanks for the reassurance! :) |
