Snapping when he feels like he is in danger??? Cooper is 17 weeks old and I've had him for about 4 weeks. He has snapped at people on several different occasions. The first vet visit I took him too he snapped at the vet while he was examining him. Yesterday I took him to the vet and the tech was clipping his nails and trying to cut the hair out of his eyes and he snapped at her. He has also snapped at my brother in law. I feel like he snaps when maybe he thinks he is in danger. We take him on walks in the neighborhood and he will snap at another dog if it approaches him. If I introduce him slowly to another dog and let them sniff each other he does much better but he does not want one to walk straight up to him. My questions is...how do I control this. I want to put a stop too it before it gets way out of control. |
Are you sure he is snapping? Puppies his age like to use their mouths A LOT. I used to think Reesie was biting us, but he was really just playing. Did you ask the vet if he thought your puppy's response to him was out of the ordinary? |
Can you find a good "puppy class" in your area? That would be a good start at socialization in a controlled situation. |

This is what I did with Reesie when he was "using" his mouth too much. Whenever he would bite I would use my fingers and tap his hind quarters hard enough to get his attention and say "NO-NO!" in a loud voice. Some people have said to pop them in the nose, but I did not want Reesie to be afraid of my hands, so I just tap his hind quarters (like on his back leg next to his tail.). This has worked wonders for us. I do it just enough to get his attention and to break his concentration. It does take time to train them. Reesie is 8 months old and he is still learning, but consistency is the key. At first, I thought, he is just not getting it, but then after about a month of tapping him on his back leg I started to see improvement. (Please keep in mind, I'm not hitting, just tapping.) Hang in there. I promise it does get better! Hope this helps!!:) |
