Road trip with a Yorkie Hi, I am finally getting my puppy on Monday! Yea!!! He will be between 11 and 12 weeks old. Here is my question...We vacation a couple of weeks a year in Tahoe which is about a nine hour drive from our home. We stop a long the way several times. When we arrive we stay in a nice house. What age should the dog be before we attempt any long drives like this? Thanks! |
i don't think age is a factor for car rides...but i would make sure they are up to date with all shots...and that they do ok in car rides...some tends to get car sick....of course depending on how long they are able to hold it in and their age you may have to stop more frequently or not. |
goes everywhere we are always on the go, with axel the most we have drove is 4 hours he is now 6 months and has always traveled well. we take a pee pad in the car and when we stop i take him in the bathroom and he pees i have even opened the trunk and put the pee pad in there and he went pee, i make sure i have bottled water and a little dish, his carrier, this past weekend he just hung out on the back seat it was a 2 hour drive he played and went in his carrier when he wanted. So travel on with your new baby! its fun...\ |
All babies are different. I would make short trips around home with him first to see how he is going to do. I have one that will ride all day and no problems. And then one the does not eat or drink while in the car or she will be sick. |
We have always taken our dogs on vacations and road trips and they do fine. We started when they were very young...Megan is good now but Maddie still hates riding but she does o.k. with light medication if it's needed. When we travel I always make sure I have everything and anything I might need for the girls like... bottled water their food in case it isn't sold where I am going Kayro syrup potty pads shot records a paper with information about who to call if there is an accident or something I don't leave collars on my girls but when we travel I leave their harnesses with ID tags on them...just in case. Oh, and you might want to have your dog microchipped before you go...and don't forget to register the chip. Things like that...I take the things my girls will need just like I pack for myself. We travel from Illinois to Florida a couple times a year (not to mention the shorter road trips and day trips) and they do just fine. |

I drove 13 hours with Zeus and my two kids over Christmas break and he did wonderful. I stopped every few hours for bathroom breaks but other than that I drove straight on. He slept pretty much the whole day in his travel crate. I was amazed at how many people were traveling with their dogs. |
Make sure you have ID on your baby just in case. |

We've made several car trips between RI and NY to visit family and Barney and Daisy do great! Teddy hates the car. He has to stay in his crate with a blanket over him or he freaks out. This is the only way he does not start drooling and biting at his crate door. We avoid bringing him in the car for that reason. My goal for the sping is to take him on a car ride for 5 mins every day until he gets used to it and build him up from there. The other two love the car. So each baby is different. |
My friend drove from NY to Az with her yorkie and just made frequent stops for him to get out and get a little fresh air.But make sure your pup is fully vaccinated before the trip ,take some chews like a bully stick to keep em busy! |
Ours have traveled alot but when we got Sophie we bought her a car seat. It looks kind of kie a big block of foam covered by faux lamb wool. We tie her lease to the shoulder harness & she rides like a dream. She loves it. |

my two girls are now 11mths old. they used to ride in my lap. now I have a double lookout seat for the back. They wear their harnesses and are clipped in. They sleep the whole time. We travel to Dallas, 12hr each way, every other month. They don't like to eat or drink while traveling. So, no pottying. I do put a preemie swaddling pamper diaper on them, just in case...they never soil it. We also have the other two dogs, they have to stop every 6hrs, and the girls are fine with just looking around while the boys do their business and then just going back to sleep. I offer them water and food...nope. The boys don't even eat, nor drink much on the road. When we arrive at destination they all four act like we just took them across the Mojave without canteens, and rightfully so.... we are very fortunate that no one gets car sick... |
